The bite has been absolutely unreal the past few days with limits by 9:30 and trout pushing the 7lb mark! I have been avoiding the birds for the most part and catching much better fish than those chasing shrimp underneath the birds as a result. My game plan on Sunday was switched up when Michael Braxton called as we were idling away from the Orange Boat Club. He said there was "a lot of red" on the radar and that it was going to be hitting us in about an hour. Instead of starting in the lake and then ending the day in the ICW, we started off in the ICW in case we needed to run in real quick to dodge some weather. Well, we never got more than a sprinkle of rain but we caught our limit of trout on our first stop in the intracoastal up to 6lbs! James drove in from Houston to fish with his buddy Keith who's been living in Beaumont for the past three years. James has fished all up and down the coast but this was his first time to Sabine and he was immediately asking Keith why in the heck they haven't been fishing over here all along! Needless to say, I believe they're hooked and will definitely be back.
Keith started out the morning with the hot hand and got an earful from James about it. According to James, Keith had homefield advantage. James slowly but surely started making a comeback and when Keith hit a little cold stretch and James landed the biggest trout of the day it really hit the fan! I've heard a lot of trash talked on my boat before but these two could hang with the best of them. When Keith asked James how he was working it when that big fish hit James swiftly replied, "I was doing it just right!"
We eventually made our way out into the lake around 10:00 and the birds were still working a little bit around thousand yard and out in front of Sydney. We fished a few groups but the trout were no where near the size of the fish that we were catching in the ICW. We ended up traveling as far south as the dredge hole stopping on a couple of groups of birds that were sitting on the water. We landed a few solid reds from underneath the birds and threw a few more keeper trout back. The water looked good all the way down to the dredge hole and the boats were fewer and far between. The wind ended up picking up and blowing pretty good so we ran on back to the intracoastal to end our day. Keith said it had been a long time since he was throwing back 3 and 4lbers right and left. Our last drift of the day was arguably our best and we picked up one more solid flounder to boot!
The last two days were just as good if not better than Sunday. We fished yesterday afternoon and although we did not have any fish over 5lbs we did release a pile of fish in the 3-4lb range and had several solid flounder as well. The bite yesterday afternoon was a little different though. We found our fish deeper than what they were Sunday and they preferred a much slower retrieve.
This morning was on fire, we caught and released around a hundred trout including one pushing the 7lb mark and had the boat back in the lift by 10:00! It is definitely hard to beat the fishing right now but with this next front things should get even better. Tomorrow should be the best day this week and as of the moment I am open. I'm calling those on the list that can sometimes go on short notice as soon as I finish typing this report, this is one of those bites that you don't want to miss!
