I have 3 Scorpion 1000's and I love them. I can "wacky" rig a 3" Senko weightless and cast it a country mile (smooth as porcelain!). Before purchasing a Scorpion, I had no idea reels could be that free spinning. As a matter of fact, I was getting a rod for one of the Scoprion's at Sportsman's Warehouse. When I told the guy I was looking to drop shot, he ended up picking out a spinning rod for me. I told him that I was looking for a baitcasting reel and he looked at me as if I were nuts.
"You're going to want spinning gear if you are going to be drop shotting." "I have a Shimano Scorpion 1000, sir." "Oh....baitcasting it is.'
'nough said! Steven

Thanks Yes, it should have a spring just like the curados. That's the risk we take buying a used reel from Japan. I had one shipped to me with a damaged spool. Ate the loss.

I just wish they had a drag. It's like 2lb.locked down. I'm thinking after market drag washers but I've read they don't help much. Anyone tried that?
And the handles are made for women so plan on another $20 for the longer handles.
Other than that....they're great reels!

I got some carbontex washers (CT200) from smoothdrag.com for mine and it helped a lot. If you install them dry, they will put out around 5 lbs. of drag. I hear the xtreme smoothies are even stronger, but less durable and smooth.

manasota, the smoooothie drag washers are superior and will hold drag. However, after each fishing trip, it is a good idea to loosen or back off the star drag under the handle,. Doing this allows the drag washers to expand. Leaving the star drag tightened down is what ruins the drag washers asit causes them to lose their elasticity. ABU reels used to be notorious for drag slippage, but if you install the smooothies, that will stop. these smoooothies were designed for salt water use and will take alot of heat. Good drag washers for sure. conniek
