Handsdown Humminbird; dependability and service after the sale matters.

Hummingbird, for sure. I have a 798 and it's so easy to use and update. Takes great snapshots, too.

I used to say HB all the time. Then I got to look at Lowrance and compare my HB screen. If I bought again it would definitely be Lowrance. A friend of mine had an HB 1198 and after two months traded it in for Lowrance. His comment was, I saw more on the Lowrance in one day than I'd seen on the HB in two months. HB customer service is good but Low has stepped up their service. If you can look at both on the water, do so before you buy.

I hate to even respond to this cause it I've seen it turn into a pissin match before, but I've never had an issue with my HDS units or Structure Scan and think my units show a better picture than my buddies HB units do...but thats just my opinion. I've only had to call CS one time (last January when I installed my Structure Scan I had a question about wiring connections), I spoke to a person in the first minute of the phone call and my question clarified without hesitation so I can't gripe about CS. I think they are both good units and it's more of a personal preference than anything. Just my 2 cents worth.

I looked at both. I liked the better screen Lowrance offered, but went with HB. Reason - installation. I have an alumumin boat, so only one new transducer was required vs two for Lowrance. Also one new 12V hookup for HB vs 2 for LR. From what I hear, the customer service difference is now a thing of the past. You'll be happy with either unit.
If we concentrated on the really important stuff in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles
