For a good reel at a decent price, consider a Shimano Sahara ($80)or Shimano Sedona ($60). The Sahara has higher quality bearings. I like the 2500 size. Not top of the line, but both are quality reels that will last a long time with normal fresh water use. I've had one of each for several years.
In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

Thanks guys. Now I know what I'm looking for. That's the perfect price range too.

The Sahara gets my vote. 2500 size is perfect.
You know the old saying
If it floats, flys, or f___s it is always cheaper to rent!
You have to decide which is more important.

pay the extra money for a shimano made in japan, not malaysia, trust me... last i knew a few years ago i think the symetre was the cheapest but id recomend a stradic, esp w/ the high speed gear ratio.

If I was able to fish more than about 2 times per month, i would definitely go with a more expensive and reliable reel. Also if I was actually good at bass fishing.

I've been looking for a good spinning reel for a while too, specifically to match the Vendetta 6'3" spinning rod (really short handle, for use on my kayak). I had pretty much decided to get the Quantum KVD spinning reel for about $80, but last week I got an e-mail from Abu Garcia advertising their Orra S spinning reel, new for 2012, $69.95. Gonna look awesome on the Vendetta! Check it out on their website, or Tackle Warehouse. I haven't seen them at Academy yet, though I keep checking... another week or so and I'm just going to buy from TW.

I've bought two and both had issues with the line getting caught on the bail wire. It would not go over to the guide to wrap around the spool correctly. One of them also has issues with the anti-reverse switch not staying in place. Shimano or nothing for me anymore.

I've been using the new Abu Garica Orra S20 spinning. Awesome reel when you team it up with a Vertias Rod.
