Lucky,
I just read the other day that a world record for the longest cast was done with a abu garcia. I'm sure it was modified heavily, but at least you have a start.
I tried to find that article but I can't remember where I read it. Sorry

Alvey reels are some of the longest casting reels on the market today. Take a look at them. I dont like them much but I am sure they cast a country mile!

a jigmaster or squider have nothing on an alvey! The design of the reel should say enough. For those of u guys that dont know what an alvey reel is, look them up. They are a litte expensive(not that much) but they work for distance. I myself, prefer to use a spinning reel but if it was all about distance, I would probably have to go with an alvey. Good thing I am not too worried about distance because the reels are just too weird for me..lol. My dad uses them but I dont see myself with one anytime soon.

Pie,
I just looked up those Alvey reels and you are right....they are funny looking. The video is cool on how to cast w/ them.
The base freshwater reel is less than $20.00. I need to buy one of those just for the heck of casting one.

The good ones cost 150 + and they cast a country mile! I am shocked that not that many people have heard of them. They have been around a while and also held the record for longest cast for the longest time. They are funny looking but like I said, they get the job done. My dad is a huge fan but I will stick with my daiwa. If u or anyone else decides to try one out sometime, let me know what u think. When I was younger, I use to see quite a few guys out on Bob Hall chunking their baits way out with these reels on some long rods...

abu garcia's are good, adjust the tension knob each trip and everytime you use a different sized sinker.
penns are good too if you mag them. the GS series are great casting reels. the new Senators with aluminum spools are great for magging too. pretty much any penn reels with an aluminum spool is a good candidate for magging (309, jigmaster, etc).

If you are going to fish off the pier, why would you want to cast so far? I've fish at South Padre or Port Isabel piers you don't need to cast so far away. One thing you need is a strong reel and rod. You'll be surprise to see that people catch everything close to the pier. If you do some surf fishing, that might be something to consider for casting far away. Just an opinion.

Shimano Calcutta TE 100 DC or 200 or ?00 and $500 retail. Check ebay. Awesome baitcaster. I use the 200 for a Carolina rig. Often times casting the complete spool of 20# Mean Green Trilene with the wind.

Hank, the newest DC reel is the DC250...it sounds like a saltwater dream to me. Have you ever had any problems using your DC200 in the salt? What precautions do you take?
