How often should I change the line on an open face baitcast reel such as a Curado? I used a buddies rod that had brittle line last week and was wondering if there was any specified time frame.

I'm sure everyone has a different answer for you but i fish in alot of tourneys, just about all tourneys i can afford to fish.lol
Myself i change my line out every couple of tourneys.
I keep my rods and reels in my house after each fishing trip, i have buddy's that keep them in there boat in a storage building, i would think the heat would make the line alot brittle and weak before its time, how much you fish will also play a factor in the shape of the line as well.

I am with RB on this one. I change my line(mono/copolymer) every couple of outings. I dont change my braid as much but i feel that my mono gets a little old after a few trips. When I start finding knicks on my line, rough spots or a shortage of line, its time to swap out for some new line. Mono and copolymer are so cheap that it isnt a big deal to change often. I figure that it is better safe than sorry!

I change mine about once every 4 to 6 weeks, but I fish 3 to 4 weekends a month. I haven't found that storing rods in my boat or garage has shortened the life of the line. The heat does increase the memory though. But I have been testing the line treatment KVD Line and Lure and it is great at removing the memory and keeping the line supple. I don't know if it will increase the life but I would suggest you try some. You can get it at either BPS or Tackle Warehouse.

I live right behind oso bay in corus christi. I fish next to the oso bridge pileings and the whole area is covered with oyster. The trout are big and combined with the line hazardous environment I am required to change my line every couple of days. Loosing just 1 big trout is enough to make me sick. If I even suspect that my line is frayed I change. It is not worth the agony of thinking about how big the lost trout was.

I don't think you need to change lines all that often, but sunlight is the big killer on mono. I usually change mine 2 times a season, or if I am getting lots of backlashes etc. that would cause kinks to weaken the line. I change braid once per year. Smaller diameter, gets changed more often. My dad changes line after he looses a big fish!!!! bang So... somewhere in between is probably best!

Depends on several factors also... type of line used, how often you fish, how and where you store rods.

Bass, Two times a season? The season is year round and I couldnt imagine changing my line twice a year. I wouldnt have any line left on my reels after a few months.
TopDog, U dont ever wade out in that OSO do you? I have tried before and that place is so dang muddy! There are quite a few fish in there in the winter months and that is about the only time I will hit that place up. U dont ever kite fish out there do u? I see lots of those dudes always kicking it out there. Just wondering, I dont fish the Oso often but do see people there. I usually drive the extra 20 minutes and hit up some better water. I am interested, thanks!

Most fishermen change their line when it is hopelessly backlashed on baitcasters or hoplessly kinked on spinning reels....

I fish approx. 2 days per week and I change out my line on my baitcasters about once every 5-6 weeks. It's been a while since I broke off a decent sized fish so whatever makes you commfortable and confident is my best guess. I do remember reading several articles saying sunlight is the biggest danger to fishing line so I try to keep my equipment indoors.

When fishing saltwater, I change every trip (3 or 4 day trip). Freshwater reels, I change based on the condition of the line, but at least 3 or 4 times in 6 months.

I change my braided line once a year in January and my copolymer line the day before each tournament just as a confidence factor.

I change mine around 5 day long trips or when I suspect a terrorist has been messing with it. I also change just before an important tournament.

But ALWAYS, ALWAYS when the fish are biting and I am sitting in the bottom of my boat.
