Look at the Quantum Energy spinning reel. Lifetime warranty on the bail system and 11 PT bearings. I think that it's smoother than any of those Shimano's under $300. Besides that the reel is all metal design, not just the side cover like some. On top of all that the Vacuum deposition coating looks awesome and is hard as a rock.

penn spinning reels from walmart and academy are very good spnning reels

Academy sells Quantum Optixs for around $20. Combo is more. I personally love the Energy spinning reels but they run about $130. Well worth the money but this may be more than you want to spend. Sportsmans warehouse sells this reel as well.

for the money, my preference is the Okuma expiro (I don't think that is spelled right) I am mostly a baitcaster, but I use spinning when chasing whites, check them out, 10 ball bearings at about 49.00, ken
