What is your opinion on OKUMA saltwater reels?

My afternoon nap hours are subject to change if the fish are biting...

I just got one recently & only used it once so far...seems very strong & durable, etc, but had I known it had a manual lever release/engage [like a Penn]I probably would not have ordered it.[ebay]

I have a catalina and a couple indurons and I absolutly love them. I have caught big albacore and yellowtails and some big lings. They are very strong and I would definatly recomend them.

Great reels. I have had one for about three years now and love it. The crank is a bit larger than a Penn so it fits my old,big hand better. It also seems smoother. I have brought in reds up to 40 inches, 4 ft kings and big a/j's. Even some nice striper with no problems.

These are price point reels. Moist people buy them because they seem like such a good price for the features, however they seem to have the reputation for not holding up after long hours of use. If your a recreational fisher then you should be OK as long as you spray them down and lube em up reel good after each use. Penn's are more durable but not as smooth or precise. You may want to read some more posts on the Florida Sportsman forum. There are lots of posts from Okuma users. Not trying to dog the product just sharing what others are saying.

I've been using Okuma reels for several years now. I've had no problems with them whatsoever, and I fish quite a bit. I love 'em. I feel pretty sure that I'll use them exclusively for the rest of my fishing days... smile
