I am looking at a 98 champion 181 with a 150 johnson. Older elecronics and a 24v motorguide.everything seems to work ok. He is asking 5000.00. I thought that wasw a pretty great deal. what do you think? My only problem is tht champion is no longer making boats so will that make getting parts tough.
thanks for the input. I will be upgradindg from a 1986 bassw tracker 1800 tf fiberglass boat. Much drier riding boat and safer in that big water from what I know.

Is the motor a FICHT motor? If it is, the boat might be the least of your problems.

I have a 181 champ 1997 model had it since 1999 great boat but like all boats with any age on them that you use regularly they have small problems, nothing that you can't repair or replace with a little engineering and time.

I do not think it is a FICHT. most of the ones I have seen say FICHT on the cowling. Also Champs are great boats most parts you would ever need to replace are somewhat universal anyway.

Thats a great boat and motor. Only thing to worry about on those motors were the VRO pumps going out..

I think (and I stress I think) the FastStrike 150 may have been marketed as a carbed motor and a FICHT (injected) motor. If it is a FICHT, it should say on the cowling. The carbed motor is supposed to be a pretty good motor.

If it says Fast Strike on the cowling it is a carb motor, and probably the best running 150 OMC built. When in doubt about a Ficht engine, pull the cowling and look for fuel injectors by the spark plugs on the cylinder heads. As far as the VRO, the true VRO was corrected in the early to mid 1990s after serious oil injection related engine failures and this engine uses one of the latest modifications.

Looks like all it needs is a lil TLC and some time on the water.
