Feedback please. It's been 13 months since I changed the water pump out on my 09 optimax 225.

Also Need to mention the only place I fish is in Mexico. Maybe once a year is a better idea.

25 bucks for a water pump or 10000 for a new top end. I replace mine every year.

Next time you think your perfect step out of your boat and try walking to shore.

Why is that? I was told the same thing about my Mercury. I owned a Johnson Ficht motor, (the one everyone thought was worthless) and never once had to change the water pump out and I had it for 12 years. Always changed impellers and did proper maintenance, but that was it. Seems like there is a design flaw with the Mercs. Is this normal for Yamahas and the newer Evinrudes?

Is this something a certified mechanic needs to do? Or something you can do on your own? The last quote I got was way higher than $25.00 for labor and parts.

I believe that the impeller and water pump are basically the same thing in a 2-stroke outboard. Someone please correct me if I am wrong

IMO the less you use it the more oftan you should change it...If you have been using it, and the motor is pissin a steady stream you should be good to go for 2 years....

Correct. You can change the impeller without doing the housing if the housing isnt grooved to bad. "Water pump" IMO would be considered the complete deal, housing and impeller. I like to do the impeller every year and the complete water pump (housing and impeller) every 2 years. That goes for Yammys and Mercs... you can probably go several years without changing it at all and not have any major problems, its just a silly risk considering the cost of the part versus the cost of a top end meltdown. Its even more critical if you fish shallow water or beach the boat alot because of the dirt and sand it pics up over time. Just my opinion, I'm not a boat mechanic at all but I've helped do my fair share of water pumps over the years.

cheap insurance, is what I call it. YOu dont "have" to do it, but you are gonna be SOL when the powerhead takes a dump from lack of water pressure (if it comes apart). sand can do a number on those housings.

Just curious is this easy to do if you are some what mechanically inclined? I've done work on cars far as brakes, suspension, etc. Seems like this would be pretty simple? Just lower end parts I'm replacing? Good time to replace the oil too maybe.

It takes an hour to do it, parts are cheap motor isn't.

I change mine every year, but I know I put it through a work out.

What am I missing? I run an Evinrude E-Tech that doesn't even have a scheduled maintenance for three years. Plus I have a water pressure gauge. I watch the gauge and as long as I have 25 lbs showing I know I'm getting enough water. But all this doesn't jive with the comments above.

Every year no doubt.

Go Wacky.......rude says three years and will stand behind that. It's more of a preventative measure. Even though my pressure gauge says it's fine I still glance back to check the pee stream. I change mine once a year. I take mine in every time we change the clock(fall back/spring forward) for service. During the fall service is when i change the water pump. Just an easy way for me to remember.
