I've been an Abu man since the early 80's and just never made the switch. I haven't had any problems with them either. Maybe they won't cast quite as far, but they have been excellent for me. I've been thinking about trying a low profile reel for some time and wondered about Quantum's baitcasters. With the new Curado going for $200, I've thought about trying Quantum.

I recently bought a couple of PT640s and was not impressed. Mine started making noises after only a few months and the thumb bar has a tendancy of not engaging completely.

I was told to buy the Japanese made Quantums because they are better, but my Japanese 640s were not that great.

The Quantum's reels have been pretty good lately but the problem is they change models every year. At least they have the last 6 years or so. Thus, it makes it kind of tough to get parts if you need them.

Since the new Shimanos seem to have some issues with the tolerance level on the line guide, you might check out the Team Diawa Advantage 150H or Super-Tuned version HST.

You can pick up the TDA 150H at Bass Pro on sale for $59.00 (if they have some in stock). Wal-Mart carries a hybrid version of the 150 that has the wiffle spool for $115.00

Academy carries the 150H & 150 HST too.

Robert,

The 640 was discontinued in 2006 and also made in Japan. The new Energy E760 is a much better design. I would contact quantum warranty services and see what they can do the fix your problem. I heard that things have changed allot over the past few years at Quantum. Those reels should not be failing after one season. I'll bet you they will make it right.
