speaking of viewing things from the bow vs the transom, i was thinking just the other day... (don't laugh) i was wondering would it be possible to hypothetically use a SI transducer mounted 90 degrees sideways to the keel to be used to "forward scan" the terrain ahead of the bow ???? i know it seems crazy but it might be a useful tool while underway in uncharted waters.

SI DI and everything is incredible but it would be nice to know about underwater objects in front of you before you damage your hull or motor.

I tried that a couple of days ago and the images are unrecognizable. You don't get a "scan" with the SI beam. You have to keep turning the boat to have a "scan". If you could mount the transducer on something that moves it in a sweeping motion back and fourth, then it would work.

that would be a simple design to fabricate. i wonder if humminbird could alter their algorithms to have images without having to oscillate the transducer?

Problem is the SI is very narrow beam when looking at it from the side or front to rear. It's narrow but wide.

Don't think it would be that useful. But SI on the trolling motor is the BOMB! Because you can scan to the side and moving the foot pedal scan in front of you.

So why do companies not offer a forward facing sonar? One that can scan, say a 30 degree path in front of the boat? I know I might be missing the simple reason, but as far as I can see, fishing sonars bounced straight down. Then to side. You have the rear covered as long as your moving, but I have never seen anything geared towards "seeing" where you are going or moving up to the fish. Someone might say it would never work, but I bet side imaging was just a crazy thought untill someone did it.

doug,
even thou i haven't don it on the trolling mtr i can only agree that it works the bomb. you mention that "move the foot pedal to scan in front of you" that is basically what i was asking but for a different reason.

so the question remains, how well does it scan in front of you when the transducer is mounted sideways?

could this be another feature incorporated into future designs? maybe a second, smaller transducer that only has one of the 2 things that emits the frequency and it could be mounted to project along the axis of the keel of the boat. maybe even mounted to the leading edge of the lower unit?

does humminbird need any crazy thinking individuals on their R/D engineering program? (i can CAD design also)

Xandau... i like thinking out of the box

the technoligy exists since their SI already works. they would just need to include another screen and call it FS (forward scan) and utilize 1/2 of the SI transducer potted in another housing.

a few other tweaks here and there and its done yes its that simple... i should start to file my patent right away!!!

There has been "talk" of an upcoming forward scanning setup with some boats being constructed for that purpose (bow transducer). I don't remember which brand was involved in the conversation.

xanadu, a regular cone shaped sonar pulse looks just as much forward as it looks backwards and to the sides, basically 360 degrees.
The Imaging transducers do not "look" rearward, just the recorded image shows what has been passed-there is no real-time image other than to the sides and below.

I had a problem with my GPS on my 797c2 today. It would point in the right direction and even measure how fast I was going but the screen was messed up. It didn't even show the lake on the map. Any ideas to what was wrong?

Did you have a seperate map card? Mapping data is a background that the GPS data is overlayed on. Like this video explains: http://youtu.be/dfIf9LF2-yE

Can anyone help me out. Have a 798ci side imaging combo. I ran through a low lying tree while idealing and tore the transducer off. Ordered a xnt-9-si-180-t transducer through amazon installed and now im getting no down or side imaging pictures. Hit the default button but nothing. bought unit through bps with gear guard. said it might of shorted out that i need to send in for repair.

Help please!!!! I just bought an 1198 and 898. 898 at bow works perfectly with its transducer mounted on trolling motor. 1198 on the other hand has some issues. I have the transducer mounted on the jack plate and a high speed transducer mounted in the hull with the correct y cable. I have both units linked with an ethernet cable. On the 1198 my side imaging is not so clear and sonar I got nothing, I tried switching to the transducer on the trolling motor and works great. So I tried disconnecting the high speed transducer and nothing, the wierd thing was that side imageing would not work without the high speed ducer pluged in. Any suggestions???
