I think I am going to go out with my two cranking rods a few times and make it work.
Any advice for working standing timber? The kind that is littered throughout Ray Bob? I pull up to the endless array of trees and am lost at what to throw, to pitch to 1,000,000 trees and hope, work the edge, ? Find those standing trees that line the channels, baitfish tend to migrate back in the creek channels. Bang those trees with that square bill and you might get bit. Ah so there is some method to the madness, certainly will try to do that! I went out to the small lake near my house that holds some bass. Went out with a ~7-8' diving KVD and a Rapala square bill. Got whacked on the square bill with a erratic reel retrieve. Showed it's side and headed deeper...I then realized I didn't hardly set the hook as it popped off! Easy 4# fish, which would have been the biggest I've pulled out of there. That's a quick lesson to learn. Picked up a 1-1/2# on the square bill as well. Slow couple of hours, nothing much going on with the deeper diving bait.

My first bass over 10lbs on Roberts came on a deep diving crank in 4ft . my favorite crank is a Mann's 20 + second is Arborgast Mud Bug mettle lip. Both will climb over wood like a squirrel. With practice you can cast into the nasty stuff where the Hawgs live.Tuff line,71/2 or 8ft rod slow gears and tight drag. Slow crankin even lift like your wormin through the trees. I have landed 100s of bass doing this on Ray Roberts. You gotta believe !! Ex Bass guide Ray Roberts. Rudy

How do you guys feel about crawdad looking cranks? Primarily I have all but one are shad-like crankbaits. The local small lake I fish is home to some monster crawdads (~6"-7" long) that live within the mud. I'm tempted to use one and see what is eating them!

Craw pattern cranks are awesome in the right places, especially around a dam or rocks. . .generally anywhere theres a good population of crawdads.
USE THEM!!

Cool, I've seen several recently along super shallow water, so they are on the move!

I know you are wanting to get some confidence on a crankbait, but when you cruising that channel you might want to have a topwater on deck just in case they start breaking on the surface. Of course you could also take your crankbait and twitch it around too.....Good Luck

I went out to the small lake again for an hour yesterday. Just made a lap around it. Picked up three fish on a square bill. Just varying the speed/start/stop of my retrieve. I think I'd like to upgrade to a different line however.
The rod I am using is very lenient, which I feel makes it great for allowing the fish to get ahold of the lure, initially. However by the time I am actually realizing there is a fish on the end of it and not hitting grass, it seems a bit excessive. I don't have much actual feel, maybe going to a Fluoro over Big Game will be a benefit.
Suggestions?

On my shallow crank i only use 40# Suffix braid. It allows me to feel when that fish hits and also I am able to get them out of the thickest cover which is usually trees and boat docks. For my deeper cranks I use 12 to 14# flouro. Do not be affraid to throw those cranks in the nasty stuff. Also get a good plug retriever to save a bit of money.

Keep a wacky rigged senko type bait ready while throwing the square bill. If you miss one imediately throw the worm and be ready!

Just keep throwing them and come up with your own game plan and you will be killing them on cranks. It is devinitely a different tactic to use
