I'm heading down tomorrow to try some kayak fishing for reds and trout in the freeport/galveston area. I'm used to fishing up north (way up north ie Northern Wisconsin/Canada), so it will be completely foreign to me. I plan on throwing spoons and artificials in some of the bays. Anyone been having success down there? Without giving away your secrets, any suggestions for a newcomer to the salt?

I was on the east beach in Galveston two weeks ago and had some pretty good luck. I was surf fishing and found a good inlet that had a ton of mullet rolling. All I did was live bait fishing though. We caught a good number of sand trout and speckled trout in the inlet and caught a fair number of reds in the surf so I know they're there. Im going back next weekend to try my luck again. Curious to hear how you do and what you have success with.

Thanks for the help everyone! My trip was a mixed bag. I went into Christmas Bay which proved to be a difficult location to fish with the wind coming out of the North East. Spent a lot more time paddling than actually fishing. I used some gulp Shrimp with a cork rig and had 3 or 4 fish take but wasn't able to get a good hook set into them because of slack in my line due to the wind. They all came off after a short fight. I think that if I had had live bait or fresh dead, at least a few of those fish would have been in the boat. So I say mixed bag because my primary goal was to learn how what to do to be successful and i think that this trip really helped...even though I didn't boat any fish.
Karnavor2, i'm from the Madison area but have done most of my fishing on Lake Tomahawk (Micoqua are which is about 2 hrs south of Hayward) and the surrounding lakes. Thats beautiful country up there.
