Does it hurt anything to use a car battery for your trolling motor?

It will hurt your car battery and your marine starting battery. As I understand it, the plates on a starting battery are not as thick as those on a deep cycle.
I guess thinner plates mean a quicker "surge" or release of charge so that the starter can engage. With trolling motor batteries, there are thicker plates, and a slower, but prolonged release of charge. The trolling motor batteries handle the constant drain down on the battery and recharging that would harm a car starting battery.

As stated above, deep cycle batteries are designed to be charged and drawn down and recharged. Auto/starting batteries are designed to have a constant charge going to them.
