I just purchased a better fishfinder than I have now. I want ot mount the transducer iside the hull. Will the transducer that comes with the fishfinder work or does it take a special thru the hull transducer. What is the best way of mounting the transducer to the hull? If epoxy is the best way, then what is the best epoxy to use? Thanks!

If your new sonar came with a skimmer transducer, that will work in an inside mount, BUT you have to be careful to get it oriented correctly and held in place until the epoxy cures.

I've installed MANY transducers over the years and tried many different epoxies. I've finally decided the epoxy kits that Lowrance sells (see your boat dealer) works best for this purpose. I used hardware store epoxy, both fast sure and slow cure, but always seem to have problems with it softening (gets rubbery) several months down the road and then having to replace. DO NOT USE fast-cure epoxy!

Be sure you prepare the surface properly before attempting a bond. That means thorough cleaning and maybe some sanding. Also doesn't hurt to use sandpaper to roughen the transducer face to get a better bond.

If you need to run any wires or change the mounting on the head unit just take it to North Texas Fiberglass. Mike will charge you an hours labor to install new transducer, and mount it and run the wires. The whole enchilada for about an hours labor.

Use a putty type epoxy such as PC7 (Home Depot sells)or the one from Lowrance and you should not have any trouble. Just make sure that the transducer is pointed straight down and not to the side.

That's some Great input guys, I made the mistake of using the 5 min epoxy - nothing but trouble. It worked good for about 6 months, now I know why it failed.

Thanks! cheers
