Hey guys, i know now is a good time to get onto some bull reds at the jetties. I would be fishing port a jetties... My question is, would a 13ft. Boston Whaler make it out there? I know that sometimes it can get rough and I would not do anything stupid if it's windy or rough, but is it logical? I want to get on some of these bull reds, just want to make sure my boat could handle the jetties. Also, would it be best to anchor out there, or drift? Thanks

There are some really big ships that come through that Jetty, even if the seas are calm, it will get pretty rough when a tanker comes through. Tbeen out in a 28ft boat and it worked but 13 ft, I don't know if I would do it or not.

I use to fish the Sabine jetty in a 14 foot aluminum boat. Both the gulf side and channel side. You have to anchor. To close to the rocks to just float around. Use plenty of rope. Don't short anchor. Most ships push a couple of feet of water. Watch out for tug boats by themself. They push some big waves when going fast. Just be ready to pull up anchor and motor if needed. I prefer the Gulf side for that reason, but sometimes the fish are in the channel.

Me personally, that`s a little to small to be messing around PortA jetties they are and can be bad azz mothers, I have seen on very special days when the blue water was in people in little boats out there but the gulf was flat, listen things can go bad real fast in a boat that small. From what I`ve seen on different videos sabine jetties don`t look as treacherous. If u do`go I wouldn`t go more than half way out the jetties where u`ll still be able to anchor kinda close to the jetties[atleast 60ft.of anchor rope best I can remember]and catch reds running along the channel but let ur conscious or the weather be ur guide.Or u can walk the south jetties from the beach.Don`t use less than 25lb line as it will be bottom fishn. We use a 19 foot CC an we don't have problems on the inside of the POC jetties. We throw an aft anchor and after first and motor up to the rocks and throw another anchor forward on the rocks. We then back up and tighten both lines. Works great for both in and out going tides.

I, suppose just having to wait on the jetty boat coming and going is a pain and it costs $12for the ride over and back,, most usually fish south jetty because of ease and winds out of south on the other hand u could get on,the N.jetty and then off on StJo. beach and do some surf fishing. Bill

One time I thought I could go to the end of the jettys in my 16 ft. lowe flatbottom cause it is wide and deep. Well we made it just fine about 2/3 way out, then a couple of big waves came in and we turned around and headed back. About then a huge wave came in behind us and almost broke over the stern which would have swamped us for sure. Even though I will go beyond the breakers in a yak, I'll never take that lowe out through the channel again.

I would just take the Jetty boat over and fish the north jetty. I have better luck on the north jetty, plus its not as crowded. I think its too risky to take that small of a boat out there. I've been out on the jetty before when it was calm and had waves come over the jetty out of nowhere.

Alot depends on the current. I was at the port a jetties 2 weeks ago in my 20ft nitro bay cc. Going out it was absolutely beautiful. We were out there for several hours....long enough for the tide to change. My Nitro is a deep v with pretty high sides and it was sketchy getting back in. Especially when we got trapped in between a huge crew boat and the pilot boats wake along with all of the chop from the tide change.....We probably wouldn't have made it in a 13ft whaler. Be safe. Plan for the tides and you might have a shot at it. LOTS of water moves in between that narrow pass.
Man up. Fight the GOOD fight.

Sabine can get rough, just like anywere else. I have seen 5-6 ft waves off a tug boat, while your fighting the curent, its pretty scarry. Once we were out there and about ten people got washed off the jetty by a rouge wave. The boats around them managed to get them out of the water. I have actually been swamped twice, not at the jetty, but out in the bays. Once in a bass boat and the other a 12 ft aluminum V. If you ever do find yourself in one of those situations, the key is to keep the motor running. keep moving forward and get the water out

if its calm, you can make it if your boat is an unsinkable fiberglass boat. We have taken several waves over the bow on dead calm days. you get 2 waves just right and hit the end of your anchor rope and next thing you know you are praying those videos of boats cut in half and still floating are true. And then you scramble trying to cast to get your ice chest back that floated over with the wave. Also make sure to take several anchors. that jetty has several of ours... But why dont you try packery channel? you can launch on the bay side and drive up in the channel. You dont have to go all the way into the surf. That seems much safer than the big jetties.
