I had purchased an 898c SI a couple of years ago and ran with a Lowarnce up at the bow. About February I decided to get another 898c SI w/ interlink because I liked my primary unit so much. This is where I am at.
-Out of the box the unit had a dark screen but my installer got it going.
-I had gps at both units for about 2 months and it quit working on the gps. After multiple calls I sent the unit in to have it checked.
-unit went dark again, unable to power up, sent in
-got it back, no gps. Got with another guy who installs units in Del Rio. Was told it was a bad interlink w/ Humminbird on the phone.
-recieved new interlink, did not get gps to bow unit. Checked wiring again (3rd time) but it had to do with the unit(?)
-called back when I had the time and was told that it would require a Y cable and a diff wiring scheme to make work
-rewired and still not working.
-wrote as nasty an e-mail as I am willing to and finally got a phone call to work with me and my primary installer until issue is resolved, currently waiting on a network cable.

Guys - I know that anything can occur with electronics but if the system was better equiped to function via a network cable why would'nt Humminbird have promoted that purchase instead of reading from a manuel and step by step going to this hassel. I am in the end of September and have not had full functionallity of the equipment I have purchased PLUS all the other purchases of cables and waiting on their and my shipping back and forth. Pen to paper I have spent an additional $467.00 that they are not willing to reconcile with me - that does not begin to cover my time and effort on this thing. Some of you may have better local support which is what I will be looking for in any of my future purchases of electronics. Good luck.

I've had (just about) equally aggravating problems with lowrance, and have heard much worse horror stories on lowrance 7 and 10 inch screen units as well.

The Y cable is for the transducer so you can see SI front and back. I did mine myself and I had to bend a couple pins for contact but other than that it was ABC easy.Pm me if I can help any

Do you know any one that has humminbird equipment that you could possibly put your units on their boats to see if the units work there? That would tell you if it's a power/wiring problem.

If you ever think there is a Interlink issue, take that out of the equation and see if the units work independently with the power, GPS wires.

I did at one time had a Interlink box got bonkers on me after some bad firmware issues from Hbird. They sent me a new one, fixed.

Chad711 - did that multiple times - was able to make both units work from either location as long as the interlink was not involved. Got another interlink from them and same deal.

As far as anyone with HB - yes. They have their own issues that don't act exactly like mine. Both of my units are updated with the most current for 800 units.
1 owner -takes the unit about 3 minutes to come up but functions correctly once it does.
2nd guy - can't run gps on both units at the same time.
3rd guy - has to turn his units on in a certain sequence or gps does not work on the bow unit
4th guy - both units keep flashing "interlink connected" "interlink disconnected" "interlink connected" etc....

Except for 1 person that I can witness the units working. He is using the eternet cable like I am about to and his works flawlessly.

plus 1

I have two 898's connected with an ethernet cable and couldn't be happier. Well that's not true......they could be 1198's.

They always do. I've had birds on my last two boats and been completely pleased. I know Mark Perry had one go out on his iClass (my '08 boat) but I'm pretty sure he got that corrected by HBird pretty quickly.

There's a reason KVD is now with HBird, and it's NOT because of the money.
