I was wondering what you guys thought of the cabllas fly rods? I haven't fly fished in about 6 years and never in the south. I fished a lot of creeks and lakes in the Pa area. I figured with the lake levels dropping that this would be a good time for me to start hitting the ponds for perch and bass. I was looking for a 5 wt 2 piece 9' combo just to get started and they have one for around $60.00 Is it a ok combo in your guys opinion.

Haven't used one personally but if you go look in the bargain cave at the store there are usually some in there for a good price with broken tips that you could replace easily.

Probably a decent rod, I am firmly convienced it's difficult to buy a bad fly rod nowadays, some are quite a bit better than others but a 60 buck cabelas rod is better than anything you could have bought in the 70's or 80's. If you like it, I say go for it

i have a cabelas l-tech rod, 7.5' 4wt, 2 piece. i love the rod, it is super light, and cabelas rods come with a 25 year warranty. i think cabelas makes great products, and yes the bargain cave would be a good place to start

I bought a 4 pc 5wt LST series a few years back and was quite pleased with the action for the rod. I have used that 5wt for nearly everything from trout to stripers. Good all around product.

A bit about the warranty. I was told that the Cabelas fly rod had a lifetime warranty when I purchased my first one a few years back. I recently snapped the tip off of it and when I returned it to exchange for a new one, they would only credit me for the cost that the rod was last sold for (the LST series was discontinued, but was replaced by the LSI series). I think I bought the rod for ~$189 or maybe $129 back in 2006, but the last price on the rod shown on their computer was $79. I didn't keep the original reciept, so I ended up paying another $110 to get the same rod (ended up getting a 6 wt LSI series). In hindsight, it was my fault for not reading the warranty carefully and not keeping the old reciept.

Note that I didn't have the same warranty issue with Orvis. I sent in my old Clearwater for the same issue and they sent me back a new rod no questions asked.

I have never owned one but have fished with one of their Three Forks 3 weight rods one afternoon about 11 years ago. At the time these rods were selling for about 40 bucks and had achieved a kind of cult status on some fly fishing news groups as a good rod to learn on. Most used them for those little trouts in streams. I think it would be great for bluegill around here. I liked it a lot, but if you like fast actioned rods you won't care for that particular rod much. With the cosmetics of the rod...how do I say this?..you won't ever confuse it with a Winston, but it would be a pretty good fishing tool.

I would suggest casting one of them at one of their stores and buy it if you like it.

Have fun with this stuff.

Thanks guys. I went ahead and ordered one for pick up. Nocked 20 off for the same rod and reel combo they had in store. Fly fishing down hear should be fun. I look forward to fishing with you all some day. Thanks for the advice. Daniel
