Just a quick question from a transplanted northwest fisherman, crash coursing on southern fishing. Reading my local fishing report today, I see my local lake is moderate to good on chartreuse "slabs". The term is new to me, and I wonder if someone could tell me what it is? Thanks in advance.

I believe they are spoons, you can find them in most bait and tackle's.

Thanks Therapy, just never heard the term. "Black bass good on chartreuse spoon" would seem to make sense. Cool, some direction.

Thanks again for some idea.

As far as the difference between Slabs and Spoons, the slabs are made of painted lead and the spoons are what you always thought a spoon was. Formed metal, like the Johnson Sprite spoons.

Fat dog I see that you live in Temple and that happens to be where some of the best slabs in the country are made. They are called the Don's Slab and Dorothy Keown 778-7103 makes them. I am a guide and that is the only lure that I use for whites in the open lake. I have caught every species of fish that swims in fresh water on a slab.

Thanks Crappie1 and others, at least now I know where to go and what to try. The idea of trolling with "slabs" appeals to me as I have trolled for trout for many years, and there is a comfort zone there in terms of technique. Something to get started with, so to speak.

Will call these folks, get some goodies.

Thanks again.

Don the Fisherman makes great slabs.

His slabs are famous. You can contact him through this forum.

slabs are not for trolling. you better put 15 ball bearing swivels on your line if you try it. if you want to troll, use crankbaits.

Again, thanks Kingbingo, got the idea this was a trolling lure from the way it was worded in a fishing report. Have already found some slabs, now that I know what the heck they are, you of course, are correct. They look more like a jig bait.

Looking forward to the learning curve, as a transplant from the northwest, and I can't get over the warmth and help in this forum. Cheers to all of you.

just drop the slab to the bottom and reel up a few turns. then lift your rod tip up and let the slab fall back down with a little slack in the line. this makes the slab "flutter" and drives the fish nuts.

Fat Dog, this is a very good site, and will explain everything to you...Ron from the sixoldgezzers makes them but also has a good summery on how to use a slab..

John Varner, thanks for the tip, truly appreciate it. Being an old geezer myself, I can relate to their site!
Hope to return the favors sometime. If any of you ever get up to the northwest, I can return the lure tips, at least in some areas.

KingBingo, thanks as well to you for the details on jigging technique used here. It is similar up north, perhaps with a different jig, for both salmon and trout. I have caught 7-12 lb. coho salmon, jigging with a spoon, similar system but the bottom is too deep to go there! So, you try to find their running depth and jig away. Copper colored heavy spoons, some salmon roe on the hook for stink..... yeehaw! Hope to eventually find the same pleasure with the bass thing.

The HOTTEST jig I have ever used up north is called a "buzzbomb". It is a lead jig, diamond shape, that buzzes as its falling, drives fish crazy. I have one left and intend to test it here. Who knows, maybe successful...

Happy fishing, Scott
