 Trouble with transponder mounted on pontoon

The dealer mounted the transponder to my fsh finder on a bracket on the back of the pontoon. It usually ends up pointing at the sky before the trip is over. My idea is to mount the transponder inside the bracket and cut a hole in the bottom for it to transpond out of. The question is what part of the transponder does the signal come from? Do I need to expose the entire bottom of the trandponder housing, the back portion, or what?

Grandpa,
It would depend on what brand and model the transponder is. Most only need the bottom �face� of the transponder to be in contact with the water. The only problem I foresee with what you are doing would be that you might get air bubbles across the face of the transponder while moving which will cause the depth sounder not to read the depth.
