Holy-Moley! When I walked up the back door at work this morning the entire dock was covered in crickets! I guess the cooler weather was just enough to let them hatch or something. All I know is that there's going to be some well fed fish this weekend. Besides using them live I have been tying black foam crickets here and there for a while and have a good stock of them. Easy fly to tie and the fish don't seem to care what they look like.

I tie the worst looking flies in the world, and yes sir you are right. The basses, and sunnies care not what it looks like they just bite. I am going to tie up some crickets tonight, I knew there was a reason I had that blk foam laying around.
Thanks for the idea

I've read where they prefer the gray/brown crickets to black crickets? Also there are still plenty of tan/yellow grasshoppers around (at least around Houston...). All sorts of opportunity to fly ties! laugh

I agree with fisherwood. I have tried the black crickets a few times. After all, when they swarm you can scoop up a bunch for free. But I quit using them even if free because the bream just didn't like them. I couldn't even catch enough for me alone to eat. So, for 50 years I have used what I consider the best bream bait, grey crickets. I catch 10 times more with greys than blacks.

Also, grasshoppers work pretty well also, BUT ONLY IF THEY ARE BROWN. Forget the green grasshopper. Even worse than the black cricket

I saw the black crickets out at where I work tonight. Problem is my company has killed 3 rattlesnakes in the paved parking lot in the last two weeks so I gave up walking during my breaks and collecting crickets out there in the dim light is now out of the question.

Well Darkside, I would say your priorities are right on. Free crickets aren't worth a painful ( at the very least) bite.

Smart man ur

I'll be glad when the cold weather hits and those snakes go to wherever they go in the winter.
