How often should you replace the line on a reel? I am using trilene xt and was told to replace it about every 3 months, but that seems a bit overkill.?
The worst times fishing are still better than the best time thinking about it.

I fish about twice per month.......so I replace the line once per year. If line becomes to short on the reel during the summer season, I take off about 25 ft and tie on new line and refill the reel. I have never lost a fish due to line breaking(17lb test).
...and I am usually fishing for stripers.

Depends on how often you fish and what type of line you use. I mainly bass fish, and go anywhere from 5-10 times a month min. Including bass tournaments, so I change my line more than most. I change mine on some of my rods every or every other trip to the lake. Mainly because the line has a lot of memory and I don't like the line being coiled up when I am throwing something weightless. I would say all of my reels (except braid line) get new line at least every 4-5 trips to the lake. I usually keep them on a rotation and do 2-3 before each trip. And I make sure I have new line on all of them before fishing in a tournament. Coach

Wow Coach, you spend a lot of time changing line! I fish a couple of times per week and I rarely change my monofilament line more than twice per year (once in the spring, then once mid-season). I mainly fish for catfish in the local river and have plenty of weight to heave around, so coiling line isn't much of an issue for me.
