The water level on Sam Rayburn is at 152.17 and has been dropping. They continue pulling water to generate power, a power company has control of the first 12 ft of the dam.. Thats 12.23 ft low right now so be careful out there. We didn't have any rain to bring the lake level up in the spring. Now summer is here and we are losing more water from evaporation everyday.
Not knowing where to run can put your fishing trip to a end as you see in this picture.
Boat ramps. Where can we safely launch in the mid lake area? Jackson Hill has the best ramp with deep water. Cassell Boykin old ramps are closed but the new ramps at the park still have three lanes open. They had to close a two lane section when the water reached 8 ft low. Those ramps were made 40 ft. shorter than the plans originally called for. The three lane section is open but you need to be careful. The last section of the ramp angles down into the creek. Caney Creek boat ramp had some work done on it so that should help out a lot. Harvey creek is getting short so you have to watch and not fall off the end.
Bass fishing on Big Sam.
The weather here in Texas made a big change last week. The first front came though and dropped the water temperature from the mid 90 down to 76 degree by Thursday morning. Talk about throwing a monkey wrench into things! It had a big impact on the fish and brought some much needed, cooler temperatures. It will also help kick the fall fishing season into gear. This is when you find a lot of fish fattening up on shad for the winter. The next few weeks should show an improvement in the fishing.
The shallow fish were the first to slow down and button their lips, they could still be caught working senkos and wacky worms around the grass lines. Around the outside of the grass lines we did get a little action on Strike Pro Hunchback lures. I am looking for this one to really turn one as the weather turns cooler. Another lure that's been picking up some fish is the Stanley Spinner bait. Its one of my favorites in the fall to cover a lot of water and find some active fish. The crankbait bite has been slow with a few fish coming off long points and around timber. Humps and ledges have been holding a few fish in 8 to 16 ft with most of these fish being caught on C/R on Brush hogs and old monster worms.
The crappies have still been biting. We had the grandkids out the other day and had a great time catching some nice size crappie. We love to watch the kids catch fish. The excitement on the boat is just unbelievable as the kids Reel um N. The pontoon has plenty of room for everyone so get your group booked for a fall trip. The crappie will soon start to move back up river. There is plenty of shade and we have two fans to help you keep cool along with a changing room and port- o- potty, just in case.
CRAPPIE CONTEST
We had one group that caught 110 keeper crappie and so far they are holding the lead for the free crappie trip next year with Reel um N Guide Service. If you think you can beat that with your crew you need to come out and give it a shot.
God Bless
