Is there a good way to temporarily mount a transducer inside the hull to determine the best and most-efficient mounting location? Also what is the best way to remove an old transducer that is already epoxied to the inside of the hull? From looking at my hull, where the old transducer is mounted, would be the ideal mounting for the new one.

Not garanteed on this but to remove the old one I would try to use some kind of solvent that will disolve the epoxyand just use a very little amount at a time to keep from making a big blob mess. As for the new one I have heard that you can set a bag of sand or something on it to keep it from moving around. If it works let me know, I have been thinking about doing mine, Good Luck.

I have removed a few epoxied in transducers and have always knocked them out with a hammer. Tap all around the transducer if you can get to it and than place a pieve of wood against it and give it a good whack. The transducer should just pop out of the epoxy. be sure to grind down as much of the old epoxy as you can before installing the new one.

A plastic bag full of sand of gravel works well in keeping a transducer in place while testing an inside the hull mounting location. Be sure and add enough clean water inside the hull so the transducer is at least partially submerged. Also make sure you don't have any oil of grease inside the hull or on the transducer before doing this as this will cause air bubbles to form and will make the installation look less sensitive than it is.

If you are looking for another way to install a transducer inside the hull by not by using epoxy to hold it in place; e-mail me and I can send you a pdf file that shows a way of doing so.

You are most likely correct in that the ideal mounting location is where the old transducer is now.

The original spot of the old trnsducer is probably the best spot. You could also try using a marine silicone from a tube to experiment with other locations without doing damage to you hull. It is easily removed.

There are three problems with using silicone to mount a transducer inside your boat’s hull:
1. The silicone will absorb some of the acoustical energy making your depth sounder system less sensitive.
2. It is harder to install a transducer with silicone without leaving air bubbles underneath the transducer thereby decreasing the sensitivity of your sonar system.
3. Some silicones have been known to attack certain plastics.

This is not to say that I have not heard from many fishermen who have installed inside the hull transducers with silicone who have not had problem – just wanted to warn you about what could happen was all.
