Need fellow TFF members thoughts on my recent transaction. What would you do?? Note: This deal was not made on TFF Forums
Agreed to trade my HDS-7 for a HDS-10, + cash, and added $50 for shipping since he asked and I felt the deal was worth it. Both parties stated their units were 2010 purchased mounted on a tournament angler fishing boat and were 100%.
Recieved the HDS-10 5-7 days later, Paid the cash through Pay-Pal the day the deal was done. The HDS-10 came to me in the same box i shipped my HDS-7 in. I found this funny since we both agreed to ship out the units the next day, they would cross in transit. Hooked up the HDS-10 in the house immediately after opening the box. Well four of the six soft keys were not working. I won't go into details about Lowrance out of warranty cost, since I mentioned it already in another post. They seller was contacted, he stated he did not use the softkeys and did not know they were not working, he agreed to ship me his second HDS-10 unit that he knows the keys work. I guess he used that unit softkeys and not the other one with the bad keys!! He also sent me $20 bucks for shipping the first HDS-10 back, which I did the next morning again before recieving the 2nd HDS-10 or money for shipping. We are both trusting guys and would not screw each other, thats what people do on these forums, trust each other and help out when we can. Now I have to leave for work again and cannot check the 2nd unit out for a week. ( Keep in mind now he has had my HDS-7 in his possesion for about three weeks. ) Recieved the 2nd unit and all tested good, I believe we spoke on the phone after this and he again stated that he would not screw people,, I believe him!! he stuck to his word. Everyone is happy he has his unit now going on four weeks and I have mine. I spend a few days mounting bigger ram mounts drilling more holes in my 40K+ boat, go out and test it, alls good !! Go back to work for a week, end of story!! Wrong Recieved and email saying that he traded the HDS-8 to another guy and it would not read tempature and the guy wants his HDS-5 back and now he has to pay shipping again, and wants his money back if the guy cant get it to work, he is working with Lowrance. Did I loose you, I traded a HDS-7, whats he talking about a HDS-8? Well I email the guy back, figuring he meant HDS-7, attached a page of directions from this forum on the tempature issues and how to correct them, and then spent the next two hours feeling guilty, read another forum for two hours and attached more info to an email and sent it to him. Also mentioned that he should have tested it out on his boat first !! before trading it off, besides neither one of us knows what kind of setup this third party has in his boat, does he even have a tempature sensor. Did he read anything on the HDS-7, all he has was a five. I also offered him to contact the third party and let him know that he could mail me the HDS-7 and I would hook it up and video or take screen shots of it working on my boat, and pay the shipping to send it back, thats what TFF guy's do, help out!! So what would you do ?? The saga continues until party three contacts party two and party one (me)can finally again feel that a good deal was done and dont feel guilty. P.S. Sorry for the long post !! and forgive the spelling, I still cant figure out how to use spell check on this forum.

Yep, you lost me on the HDS-8 trade. I don't think it's up to you to "warranty" the unit once the guy traded it off. Nice that you offered but it might be a never ending ordeal otherwise.

JMO--I don't think you have any responsibility to the 3d party. Let 2d party handle it the best he can. You did everything you were supposed to do. It's great that you're willing to help out the 3d. Kudos to you.
I can do better---I just never have.

Thats the kind of response I was hoping to get, keep them coming. P.S. Just recieved another email saying I should do the correct thing and take the unit back, and he did not want to end up with two damaged units. My response. I thought most would not agree with him, my reputation in these forums is just as important to me as his. I wasn't sticking him with two damaged units, one was his to begin with, that he unknowlingly tried to trade me for my unit. And operator error is not nearly the same as damaged or broken. However now I told him he should take the unit back, test it, make sure all the settings are correct, and if it still dosn't work, send it too me and I will test it on my boat, only then if it dosnt work would i consider to reverse our deal, which i still am having a hard time to figure out how could anybody ask this of me after trading it to another party.

"Who's on first ..."
All I can say is "good luck". I definitely feel your pain. Most of my trades, sales, etc. have been either on CL or eBay, and most of the time they go off without a hitch, but ... every once in a while ...
This might be the weirdest, most pointless post ever. I am not against golf, since I cannot but suspect it keeps armies of the unworthy from discovering fishing

I think you have done enough to help out this situation..I hate to say it but this whole deal sounds like a monkey ----ing a football. Seems the other guy is trading a lot of HDS units and cant keep up with who he is dealing with....

The original deal is a DONE DEAL. You traded him a HDS7 that fully worked on his boat. He traded you a HDS10 that was a lemon with bad soft keys but made it right by giving you another that was fully functional on your boat.
THAT DEAL IS COMPLETELY DONE and you should NOT do anything else except wash your hands.
Just my thoughts...

John, I think that's how most people would feel. I really think he should have waited until party three at least had exhausted all his options, and then took it back from him and made sure it actually was no longer working, before even considering contacting me. I posted this here hopefully to help others not make the same mistake, not buying and trading on this or any other forum, but using common sense and check out the items you purchase when you recieve them. I will say that the guy is a regular and has 100% feedback in another popular northern forum, I just feel sorry for him, I think he is learning a lesson with this transaction.

Another thing also is the unit that you traded first worked perfectly BUT in the time lapse there is no telling what has happened to it. Dropped on the floor/ground or in water ect. So theres no reason to have it sent back to you. Its been out of your possession way to long for you to say it is in working order to the 3rd party.
Wash your hands man you did your part. Its between them now. Just my .02

Just got an email and guess what? The third guy, downloaded 4.0 and checked his settings and got his unit to read the temp.
