I think you will get a lot of votes both ways. I have owned both and think each one has it's advantages and disadvantages. I personally now own a Minn Kota foot controlled trolling motor. It is quiet, powerful and I just like the way it works for me in tournament situations. I like the foot control for my type of fishing where I like to go down banks throwing spinnerbaits etc. and for shallow flipping where I can control the boat without having to stop fishing to work with a hand control. The only disadvantage sometimes is if you are out in the middle of the lake or on a point when the wind is really blowing it is sometimes hard to control the boat and yourself in really rough waves.

Both manufacturers build quility motors. If you're in the market for a 5-speed motor, you really cant go wrong with either one.I've seen 5-speed MinnKota's and Motorguide's come in the shop that were over 15 years old.If considering a large 24 volt variable speed motor,Motorguide uses a new Digital Gaurdian system that does not interfere with your sonar;and MinnKota uses a very reliable, time tested system. Both manufacturers offer 3 year warranties.Good luck in whatever you choose.

Have owned and used both but now have the MinnKota. As a crappie hunter I prefer the flex shaft on the Minkota rather than the metal "bendable" shaft on the motorguide when fishing in the trees. I've hit some pretty good stumps with both and the MinnKota survived.
