I heard at a demonstration at a boat show that line visibility does not matter. So I went and tied on some Power Pro. Well I've had a hard time catching anything when fishing the ultra clear freshwater and am starting to wonder if this faded power pro line is detering the fish (or if it's other factors)... It seems most of the pro's on this forum go low vis (for fish anyway) types of line. I like the feel of braided line; esp. the no-stretch, but may tie on a flourocarbon leader or something. So does it really matter? Btw, I thought about getting the Cajun line but that stuff seems to have a lot of stretch (just from pulling the tag end out of the box).

If they will eat a piece of watermelon plastic or a plastic blue and yellow crankbait or a chartreuse french fry then I would venture to say no.
I use high vis exclusively. Especially at night with a blacklight.

I used to use Trilene Solar (in daylight)while striper fishing and it never seemed to affect my catching any. Normally however, I use low vis Trilene almost exclusively for all types of bass fishing. Personal choice, nothing more.

I also dont think it matters; however I usually troll or jigf for stripers and whites and use low vis green on the reels with flourocarbon leader. Who knows.... for sure.... but many folks use nothing but high vis and catch a lot of fish.

Well I guess it's other stuff then. It's hard to be scientific (with conditions, etc.) when I've only been able to get out every other week or so, but I think some experimenting is due. I really want to try the Berkley solar, but haven't seen it at Walmart or Academy. Seeing the line really helps me focus for a quick reaction to a strike.

JW03. It think it doe's matter in clear water. I use Power Pro and have caught fish using it. I don't think it makes any differance in most texas lakes. I do use Flouracorbon line on my crankbait rods but that's because the line sinks faster than regualr mono.

Short answer is - depends on the fish targeted, clarity of water and technique. No one line works for all situations. Trout in crytal clear water - line vis will matter; a bass buried up in hydrilla won't care. Boils down to whether the fish will ignore the line as background or if the line stands out. Generally fish with hyperacute site (fish that eat really small things), clear water or techniques that allow fish to inspect the lure/bait - I want clear or flouro line/leader. Fast feeding fish, turbid water, reaction bite techniques - line has less influence. A comprimise is to use the opaque or hi-vis for your main line with a clear leader.

I myself do not believe that it matters. But the only real answer lies beneath the lake!

JW03, Setting aside fly-fishing small, clear streams for native trout with #22 or smaller midges which is going to require a pretty light, "invisible" leader tippet of 1-2lb test or so, my personal experience is akin to what akaCaster and LOCALANGLERS said. For LMB, I've used/use the fluorocarbon copolymers, the fluorescent clear/blue monos, the green low-vis monos, clear, and colored monos with no discernable differences in hook-up ratio, day or night. I use the line I'm most comfortable with, and is within the rod/reel/lure weight recommendations. Hope this helps,

What about all those old timey pictures where your great grandfathers caught tons of bass on braid. Makes you go hmmmmmmm?
