Where I can find a 10 wt., 11 foot "switch" rod that doesn't cost $850? I thought it would make a really nice rod for the surf and I have searched like crazy. Only one I found was at Orvis; nice, pretty, light and undoubtedly a good rod. But $850 is more than I wanted to part with, especially since I already have a nice 9 foot 10 wt. Any ideas (other than learn to cast your 9 footer better)? Thanks in advance.

Will cool

In this life there is fly fishing and tying...and then there is all that other stuff in between that doesn't matter.

Would either of these work? http://www.beulahflyrods.com/products/surfrods/surfrods9-10wt.php

http://www.beulahflyrods.com/products/switchrods/classic/switchrods8-9wt.php

RIO actually has some recommendations for these rods on their website.

Talk to Bob at http://www.coltonfly.com/
I couldn't be happier with the three I own. For 10# look at the Tradewinds model but also look at the Leviathan series. I think there's a video on the web somewhere of an 8# lifting a CMU off the floor and wagging it if I remember correctly.

Just tell him what you'll be fishing for and he can match his product to your request.

Bob lives in Pennsylvania but originally from Texas. Great guy.

you could build one for half the price.

I am a part time custom rod builder, Rods By Chris. I specialize in fly rods, but just down right enjoy building custom fishing rods. I see each as a piece of art.

Not a 10wt but you can get the TiCrX conversion kit that will turn a 7wt or 8wt fly rod into a 11'6" switch rod, two rods in one.

I threw a couple of Beulahs at the IFTD show in New Orleans. Not bad at all.

I sometimes stumble on some deals on blanks like that and can make you one way cheaper than that; maybe $200 bucks or so, according to the cost of the blank. I just saw a 14 foot 3 piece spey blank in the 8/9 weight for $40, regularly $140-p-

If you're looking for a deal on a used switch rod, I'd look in those areas of the country where a lot more fly fishers use/trade that style of rod.

Personally, I'd keep tabs on the Washington Fly Fishing website's Classifieds:
