I live in San Antonio, and I'm just getting started in fly fishing and I'm looking for some areas that are wade-able in this drought. I looked around on the Medina in the Bandera area today, and the water levels did not seem promising. Looking at flow/depth gauges on the upper Guadalupe don't look promising. I'm wondering if the Blanco, San Marcos, Frio, or Pedernales are viable options right now, and if so, any good crossings to check out? I've picked up Mr. Hutchison's book, so I now know all of the crossings . . . just need to know which ones are right for me in this low-water world we're living in.

Thanks!

Hey Max, you may try posting this in the panfish forum as well there are lots of San Antone folks on there. They can most likely give you current conditions of creek/river flows

I live in SA and I was out today and it was rough with the no flow and algae/moss. I did manage to catch 15+ bass, 4 sunfish(perch for you Texans), and 3 rio cichlids though. PM me and maybe we can work something out. The place I fish is no secret but I still don't want to post it for fear of more people.

I'd really like to take a look at the Guadalupe or the Blanco next weekend . . . just don't want to make the drive up from S.A. if it's nothing but creekbeds. Anyone . . . ?

Read my Guadalupe post. I have been there twice in the last week or so. If you have a kayak or floating device you might have better luck.

Calling Fly Fishing a hobby is like calling Brain Surgery a job.

I am currently without the aid of flotation blush

Any ideas of where a good spot (or two? or three?) would be to start my hunt on the Guadalupe? I've got the Hutchison book, so I could just work my way down the various crossings, starting from the dam . . .

You could try that but the hardest part to that is finding parking. The only available parking are at the camps and you will have to pay. I don't think it is that expensive but you could get into some fish this way.

I live in Kerrville, and here is where I go.
On the west side of town we have a lake called UGRA Lake(Upper Guad Reg Auth). It is down 4 or 5 feet, so you can wade in places that have not seen the light of day in 30 years.

If you have GPS or not, take Hiway 27 west toward Ingram. About a mile out of town on the left is Arcadia Loop. Drive down it until you reach the dead end. There should be a place to park, and walk down to the river bed. There are acres of gravel bars to walk on the north bank, cast toward the south bank. When you get under the big bridge (Thompson Drive), cast toward the shadows of the bridge pilings with something like a Clouser. I was there Sunday morning, and a fellow was fishing with 6# test, and a 10# catfish broke off.

You need to be a decent caster and be able to make long casts, sort of like Bonefishing. If not, it might be a good place to learn.

The Hill Country Fly Fishers are meeting tonight at 7 PM at the Riverside Nature Center. Google us.
