In today's issue 9/13/11 in the Ft, Worth Star Telegram newspaper. It was announced starting today that the coal power plants at Fairfield & Monticello will be shut down today.
I have been trying to keep up with this issue for awhile and posting it here on the TFF. I now hope they quit restocking Lake Fairfield with redfish, because now they will just die out.

That will end up being the same with both Calaveras and Braunig lakes in the not so distant future.

Hummmm.....No more redfish, no more talapia, no more plecos, and now maybe some stockings with native fishes.

Doesn't sound so bad to me!

The loss of Fairfield as a hot water lake is a real tragedy to those who fished it before the fish kills of the last two years. In addition to Redfish the lake was a world class Bluegill fishery.

There is nothing wrong with stocking Texas lakes with unusually hot or cold water with exotic fish like redfish that grow old and large and then die out. That is the basis for several popular fish such as Striped Bass and Walleye that cannot reproduce in our lakes. If they are replenished every year there are always fish available. Now that the power plant is to be shut down TXU will have no incentive to maintain the lake. I wonder what will happen to the lake property. Maybe TXU will donate it to the state park.

Donate? frkazoid

More likely to sell it, but I'd be surprised if the state would pony up the money at this point in time.

One point to consider is the lawsuit pending against the EPA. Depending on the outcome of that (and the 2012 elections), there could be some changes to those plans.

I would suspect after it is all said and done. They will be rebuilding those generators to burn cleaner and start them back up.
We are short on electricity now. We had rolling blackouts this summer and it will be alot cheaper to build on that site .

obummer swore to put the coal industry out of business, when he was campaigning ... i wouldn't look for any of them to start back up

it does not have anything to do with the enviornment ... it's all strictly political ...

catfishing is now an industry ... it's best for the industry to eat baby catfish

If I were a betting man, I would bet they are back up and running by the first of Dec. if not before. At least it will stop Sandlin from being pumped dry for a while.

Braunig is not coal fired, so it will not affect that lake.

I saw the channel 4 news story yesterday morning. ERCOT said we would have rolling blackouts in the summer months. For Sure. The grid would not support the current load without those plants.

My bet...not gonna happen. Not until more plants are created.

Glad to have taken..."the trash in the back!"

There is to be two new Nuke plants opening in 2014 and 2015 in Texas, along with other plants that produce electricity using wind and solar, but again, it's a few years down the line.

The coal plant at Calaveras (Deeley) is old, and not cost effective to keep and why it is scheduled to shut down.

I would not count on Braunig for the same reason, and when the new plants get underway it to will probably bite the dust.

This isn't just speculation since these plants mentioned are already underway, and take note of the solar field on the way to Braunig. They are planning to expand on that very soon also.

Deeley is being shut down because of expected stricter emmission laws for coal plants. The cost to upgrade is not worth it.

Jimbo- What new nukes are you refering to that will go on line in 2014 & 2015? I know they are talking about 2 more reactors at Squaw Creek but that's years away if ever.

The two new reactors at South Texas are on hold/delayed following Japan.

Per this LP quote link Neither Monticello or Fairfield boilers will shutdown, only their lignite mines, stations will be fired instead with more expensive wyoming low sulfur coal, so they might might lose some loading to cheaper fuel sourced generators except at max. out time intervals like deep summer or winter.
