Drove out to Glen Rose about 3:30 this afternoon intending to fish the Paluxy. It was bone dry so I figured it was time for me to check out Wheeler Branch. Paid my $10 to get in (non resident) and fished from the bank till the park closed (8:00 PM). Caught four largemouths (lost one) and one aggressive channel cat that hit my 1/4 ounce rattle trap. Fishing was tough until 6:30 or so (only one fish before then). The bass move up from their deep water hideouts as the sun gets closer to setting.

Lots of grass in the water which is good for the fishery. I was mainly throwing a tx-rigged baby brush hog in watermelon red fan casting out from the bank trying to cover as much water as I could with it. Caught three this way. The biggest bass of the day came right around sunset throwing a red craw rattle trap in front of the pier. These fish are feisty for their size. That fish would probably go around 2.5 pounds (didn't take the time to weigh it). The channel that hit the trap shortly thereafter was really nice (3.5-4 pounds). Kept it for the table. I lost another bass on the last cast of the night that would have been around 2 pounds. Threw the trap back at me the second time it got airborne. Would of had around 10 pound bag if I managed to land that last one (not a legal bag though as its a 14-21 slot lake and all but one wasn't a slot fish).

All in all, good trip. I feel like I could have caught more if I had a kayak and was able to spend time fishing offshore structure during the heat of the day. Beat the banks with a trap early and late in the day and spend the rest of the time probing deep water.

I, too went about 4 or so. We had the party of 4 yaks. All caught some bass. I landed 4, another 2 aerially spit the hook. All mine were largemouth. Expected some from the big rockpile, but none there. One larger smallmouth was caught. All the largemouth were uniform size and looked healthy. Dark colored worms worked best for me. I would like to know if any walleye have survived. Very nice little lake and was nice to have no drunk bottle breakers or boat wakes. All was peaceful.

I went last weekend. Was only there 2 hrs, caught one and lost one. I asked the man at the booth about the walleye. He said that Fish and Game, while doing shocking to check on the fish, only had 1 Walleye. Not very promising.. It is the middle of summer so hopefully they are laying in very deep water and didn't get shocked up??? I plan on finding out by specifically targeting them once it gets cooler...

one was caught the first weekend the park was open. a guy posted a picture in the wheeler branch thread over in the freshwater discussion section.

The one fish that was posted was good sized. It offers hope. I doubt if shock fishing would get the walleyes. They should be deep in the cool water. See the Walleye here.

At least as exciting was the size of the large bluegill the same guy posted. This spring the spawning bluegill should provide great sunfish catches. See the Bluegill here. The guy thought it was a perch. I wish TPWD would put yellow perch in the lake. If it is cool enough for Walleye it is cool enough for perch.

FYI In the state of Texas a bluegill is a perch is a bream is a sunfish or a brim. A yellow Perch is a Yankee fish !!!

A bluegill is a perch only to the unlearned, in Texas or anywhere else. Brim is bream misspelled. Bream is an acceptable name for sunfish only by long usage, and we do not have true bream, which are found in Europe. I am a native Texas resident, born in the Lubbock area. That does not mean that I cannot want fish called by their correct name, but I have largely given up the crusade to teach others.

Yellow perch are indeed a Yankee fish, just like the walleye. Bring them down here and we will make them welcome! They have the reputation of being prolific, tasty and fun to catch, just like our sunfish. TPWD had an aggressive program to stock yellow perch as late as 1997, when so many stocking experiments were dropped.

We caught 2 walleye last week on our trip there. Both were 18", maybe a little bigger. We were bass fishing and both were caught on a football head jig in 25-30 feet of water on a steep drop. Neat little fishery. Cant wait to get back down there. May go back on Tuesday!

Wow. People in Texas (including me) call bluegill perch. It's the facts of life... get over it. We are not all fish experts like you and use the fish's scientific name.

Fantastic! It is wonderful that the walleye have lived and grown to 18 inches. I feel sure that more would have been caught if they had been targeted. I now have heard of 4 that were caught, all in deep water. When you go back you might want to try specificly for the walleye. Good luck.

I am not an expert. I have trouble telling the bass apart and some of the species of sunfish. Pulling these guys' chain a little is all good fun unless someone gets mad. Sorry if it annoyed you.

I brought some walley gear and tried for a little while. They would be tough to target specifically in that lake. We covered a lot of water and fished open to about close. Maybe if they keep stocking, but I don't think anyone will go there and tear them up any time soon. I fished with two pros. If they were thick, I think I would have seen more caught. But it is fun just knowing there is a chance!

Walleye in Texas? How's the bass fishing? I thought I might try it out this saturday but not sure.

So what are the rules regarding boats? Didn't I read that no gasoline engines were allowed? Can you launch a full sized bass boat and just use the tm? And how about reloading on the trailer? Does the ramp have the right slope to allow you to get the boat back on the trailer without firing up the big motor?

A co-worker fishes it a couple times a week and he has a full sized boat.Yes its tm only he said he has no problem getting back on the trailer without the big motor.But he did say that he was told if he needed the big motor to get back on the trailer that it would be ok with staff.
