Just bought this reel yesterday and holy cow its wicked. I noticed sometimes I could cast it perfectly and not even put my thumb on it to stop the birds nest, but sometimes it would do it bad.
I am a greenhorn with it so can anybody can me any advice?

Keep training your thumb. It's the best insurance against over-runs no matter what reel you use. practice practice practice.......
At least my boat and truck are paid for, woo hoo!

when u first start using a baitcaster, if u will set all of the brakes out on it and tighten the tension knob down on the reel handle side, and tie a 3/8 to a 1/2 ounce weight on it and hlod the rod out in front of u. push the freespool button and adjust the tension knob until the weight drops and can land without causing a backlash. after that, cast it to get used to it. the better u get with it the more u can loosen off the tension know and push more of the brakes in. good luck!

A couple of things....
1. Make sure you are using the same casting motion. 2. I adjust the tension know and the brakes depending on the wieght of the lures.
The world is changed by your example, not by your opinion.
