IMO, those fancy curved bars are lighter weight & cost more but work just as well if not better. some are AMAZINGLY light weight.

The difference is ergonomic, curved ones are designed to make your paddle more efficient, however as you probably already know, they are quite abit more expensive, I'll get my curved paddle when I win the lotto. No, maybe I won't as I be getting a HellsBay skiff instead http://www.hellsbayboatworks.com/index.php?/boat-pages/boat-neptune-feat

Bent shaft paddles are for ergonomics. The angled grip portion helps keep your wrist and elbow more inline through the stroke which helps prevent carpal tunnel, fatigue and promotes a better paddling stroke.
As other have said, bent shaft paddles are only done on paddles made from fiberglass, kevlar, and/or carbon fiber. The obvious draw back is the price of those paddles. However, when you step up from a plastic blade, to fiberglass/kevlar, to carbon fiber you're getting a lighter and stiffer material. A lighter paddle helps with fatigue. A stiffer paddle transmits your energy to the water more efficiently.
Others will disagree with me, but you need to get the best paddle you can afford. My personal paddle is the Accent Diamond HE Edge Bent Shaft, all carbon fiber, and weighs 26 oz.

Eh, I mailed in the last 20 or so yards. (Sorry B_Rod)
The paddle helps a bunch, but it's even better with a correct paddling technique.

Wow. Cool looking paddle. $150 seems high to me but like with everything you get what you pay for.

Ergonomics is relative. After using a straight shaft paddle for so many years it not only felt strange but messed with my wrists and shoulders as well. But then again, I am a little strange. Can't use the ergonomic key boards they put on our computers at work either.

Ninja please... Where did you steal that quote from? yeah, im thinking of putting it in my semi-auto-biology. been speeking with my publisher & shes thinks i cant get $.05 per 100 copies & mentioned something about recycling. Ren, you'll have to buy a bootleg digital copy if you want to learn the art of catching Bass in open water. i really dont have time to give you any more LMB or crappie lessons!

im thinking of putting it in my semi-auto-biology. I think you mean semi-auto- biography. I really don't want to know what a semi-auto-biology is.
