What's this all about you ask?
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) will be conducting a Largemouth Bass Research Tournament to collect bass for scientific study into stress and the effects of the Largemouth Bass Virus on delayed mortality. This event is supported by The Texas and Oklahoma B.A.S.S. Federations and Oklahoma Anglers Unlimited (OAU).
The tournament take-off and weigh-in site is Grandpappy Point Marina, at the mouth of the Little Mineral arm on the Texas side. Participants can launch anywhere but must come to the Marina for a pre-tournament briefing and boat inspection at 5:00 a.m. Grandpappy Point Marine has a one-lane ramp and no parking so we recommend using the South Dam ramp or the Lighthouse.
Each entrant will compete alone in the tournament but MAY be assigned to carry an ODWC or TPWD official as an observer. These observers will collect livewell water quality data during the day but may also fish to collect additional bass for the study. The observers fish will not be weighed with the volunteer boaters fish. Entrants will be assigned to one of two groups (treatment = using ice and salt and recirculating aeration all day; non-treatment = no ice or additives and only freshwater flow-through aeration).
We need only largemouth bass for this study, therefore smallmouth and spotted bass should be released immediately if they are caught. We understand this may upset some anglers but this is after all, an LMBV research project and only largemouth bass can be used.
Nows your chance to step forward and help make a difference in largemouth bass management and spend some one on one time with a fisheries biologist or technician from these state agencies.
