That's crazy, sounds like something from the TV series LOST! Great job Carey. It would have been funny if a GW would have seen you of all people picking up game fish and putting them in your live well.

Was it cloudy there yesterday? If so, the respiration from aquatic organisms may have been using oxygen faster than it was being produced from Photosynthesis. Oxygen levels are usually lowest just before sun-up because aquatic organisms have been using DO all night long and the water is hot as well. If it is cloudy the next day, DO drops to really low levels and results in a fish kill. Also expect this if we get small showers that wash nutrients into water bodies, but not enough rain to really oxygenate the water. This will cause an algae bloom many times during warm weather. If there is enough rain it can also cool the water's surface, causing a turnover.

Today, I have to say, was one of the most amazing trips that I have ever been on. As some of yall know, I hit Lavon the other day and pulled out a 25 lb plus sack at hight noon, needless to say, I left my phone in the bed of the truck to fry. Anyways, I hit the lake after the storm passed and man it was choppy as all heck. Blowing 15-20mph out of the East. I started with trying to get a limit of sandies and then I saw them blowing up with 50 birds diving in the middle of the lake. Went out there and got into them pretty good. Then all stopped. Puttered over to the dam midway and found a small rock pile with fish stacked. Crappie that is. 23 keepers in the boat. I thought I had my 25 but miss counted by 2... Oh well.... After the crappie, I was aleady at the Dam, so I threw out my fav crank bait and started to cast at the rocks. Bam! 4th cast 6.01 lber Caught about 8-10 LMB from 3-5 lbs. Now, this is were my day took a turn. I was at the far East corner working a small drop off and hump. Within about 15 mins the water in a 100 yard stretch started to turn Pee Green Milky looking. Then a small of sulferish... yucky. 10 mins later, I see a shad swimming on the surface dying. Another ten mins later 20 shad gulping air. 15 mins later 1000 shad dying. 15 mins later, Millions of shad, buffs, carp, drum all gulping air and beaching themselves. 20 mins later, sandies and LMB all in 2 ft of water rolling on thier sides. I run out to main lake and fill my live well and bait tank with fresh water and haul rear back to the kill zone. I beach the boat and start picking up 2 lb- 5 lb LMB's by the dozens. Throw them in the live well and drive them out to main lake in the clean water and return to the beach and did this over and over for 2 hours saving the bass and.... get ready........ FLATHEAD CATFISH. They also got stuck in the kill zone and were in 2 ft of water. I think iI am the only one in TX so far that has Noodled flatheads, lol... I grabbed every LMB and flatty I could find and returned them to the main lake where the water was clean. This went on from 11am till 2 pm and then it gradually started to clean up. 80% of the fish died in the kill zone but no bass or flatties were in there when I was done with them. 100's of sandies, shad, carp and buffs died. One of the flatties didnt make it. VERY nice job there TarponFly - Outstanding!!! Now I know that you get a lot of fish but this outing looks like it was a ton of fun - lot of variety and some really pretty fish! Now the kill thing on the other hand is a heartbreaker. Sure would be interesting to know what caused it. I think the idea of sending the video and your account to TP&W is a good idea.

Nice report on a very weird event.Strange that it was so isolated and such a short time frame.Do fish usually float up to the surface and give up when they see you?

Wow, this is very strange. Nice job saving those fish Carey. Can't say I have ever been on the water & witnessed anything that crazy.

But again, I was catching fish, the water turned that color within 15 mins and started a slick of milky water. Then three hrs later the slick you see in the video vanished and everything went back xto normal and the slick and smell was gone. It was cloudy and very wind. 20 plus mph. Out of the east. And I was in the far northeast corner of the dam. All the fish beached themselves in the shallows. I think the lake farted up some gas. IMO

Thats what happened. I was watching a program on a lake over in africa that did the same thing except on a LARGER scale. CO2 burped from the deep part of the lake and surfaced. It was so big that it killed people that came in contact with it. They suffocated . So I was thinking that this is what happened here. I noticed the day before that the sonar was not showing fish like it has been . Just a guess

Had to be # 2. sudden release. Then disappears as the water churns and mixes with the clean water returning to normal.

Simply outstanding work "Tarpon Fly"! I have never seen or heard anything like that before. I know lakes turn over but to have an angler there right when it is happening has to be a rare occasion.

There is a guy that works for TPWD here on the forum but I can't think of his name right now. Seems like it has the name "bait" in it. "Brainfart" I believe his name is breambuster........maybe..... Well it at least started with a B.
