Anyone use a propane generator for their home? My neighbor suggested getting a bigger propane tank and then get a back up generator that runs on propane. The advantages is that you don't have to store any gas, and it is semi-auto to use.

What do you guys use? Model, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Generac handled by Lowes. I use three 20 pounds bottles for ease in getting them refilled. Run a series from all three to the generater; open two bottles and close the third for a reserve. The unit I had in Houston sat on the edge of my patio and costed me about 3k installed. It would start up auutomatically 32 seconds after the main power failed. It suppied a 4BR home to include the heat and AC.

Generac, thanks. How do you figure the voltage, etc? Do they come out and figure it out?

Go to a lowes and look at the generater section. There are pamphlets there (free) that will help you determine what is best for you. I'd go a step higher if it is in your budget.

I set up my elderly neighbor with a system that will provide emergency power just to his master bedroom. Total cost was around $1000.00. He has to manually flip a switch after he starts his generater.

I am in the process of doing the same @ my home.

Why does my link not show up so you can just click on it? Sometimes it will and other times it will not?

What ever you decide on make sure you report it to your Ins co. for coverage. My Ins co told me that my gen. must be attached to my home.

I use the dealie bob tool bar above the text book, 2nd one:

Generator

That is why I started this thread, I don't the good brands. I keep hearing about Generac, I called my propane person to get a bigger tank and they gave me a guy that setups Generac out of Nac. Briggs and Stratton is a good engine, so is Honda ... but I want a complete easy system. I think figuring out the size of the beast you need is half the story.

You are storing gas in a propane tank.
Propane has advantages and disadvantages as does natural gas.

Here's one that I installed for the folks place about 1.5 years ago. 25 or 30kw can't remember. Natural gas unit with and auto transfer switch. Exercises every Saturday about noon. It's came in handy for sure. Longest run time on an power failure was almost 3 days, never any hick-ups with it. After utility power is restored it continues to run for 15min then makes the switch back to utility power vs. generator power.

When there is a power failure the generator starts imediately, ramps up to 3600rpm, and will make the switch within 10 seconds.

It's configured for 120/240v single phase.
