I was watching Mark Pack tie the Double San Diego Jam and was wondering what exactly is the difference between how he ties it where he doesnt come back through the bottom loop versus how a traditional Jam knot is tied by going through the bottom loop and then back up through the top loop.

Thanks in advance

That is the double Alton Jones knot. You can also tie a double San Diego knot whichever you choose. The one that Mark and Alton tie is very strong.

i will tell you this. . . i have had a lot of problems with break offs at the knot with a palimar knot while I am using floro! early this year i made my complaints known on another forum and was told to use the DSJK and since then no matter what i am using on whatever line! i use this knot and not once have i broke off at the knot. just a break on a fray or weak spot in mono or floro! highly recommended!!

A palomar knot will work with flurocarbon line but you MUST tie it correctly. The double line through the eyelet MUST be side by side for it to hold. If they are crossed the line will cut itself and this is especially true with fluorocarbon lines. Mono is a little more forgiving with the palomar knot than with flurocarbon line.

Get the "Knot Wars" App for your phone, it shows animated video of all knots. Great App!!

I've tied the knot Mark Pack ties for over a decade. Its good but so is the palomar.

I think the one thing that may hurt you on tying the palomar is that some people let go of the knot after looping the line over the hook and just pull the knot tight. That allows for line on line abrasion. If you would leave your index finger in the loop while making the knot more compact it lessens or eliminates this stress.

Another trick with the Palomar knot is after the final loop pull the knot back away from the bait or hook and keep it loose forming a figure 8. Keep it loose until the very end, wet it and tighten it down. That way it will not burn the knot.

That double San Diego is the strongest knot by far I have tried on fluoro. It is also really easy to tie.

at least 50% of the time that I break off with the palomar is at the knot! I have had maybe 3 times where I broke off at the knot with the DSJK! Everyone is gonna have their personal preference and none is better than any others. I know personally I will hardly ever use the palomar knot anymore and unless I experiment with other knots I will use the DSJK on Floro and mono from here on out! Crappy thing is tieing it. . . it does take a bit longer! But I highly recommend it!

I had a similar thread a few months back.
I don't know the true name of that knot but some call it the double Alton Jones knot. It is also used by Shaw Grigsby.
Since I started using it on fluoro--I LOVE fluoro!
I think it is one of the best fluoro knots out there.
I don't know of objective tests which compare the dsj to the knot you mentioned but both are good-basically what ezbassin said above.

If you are breaking a Palomar knot you are tying it wrong.

The best tip in that video was hanging something off of the hook. He hung pliers.

I have watched a few videos on the palomar. . . lube it up with spit and carefully cince down but I still break off a lot! Its okay. . . again its personal preference and you can defend the knot all you want but again the DSJK is the Bomb!
