I know that the smaller the diameter of the mono or fluoro used, the farther you can cast and the deeper you can get the bait.
My question is would there be a problem with using like 30 pound braid with a fluro leader instead of straight fluoro? If that is not a good idea, then what pound test fluoro do you guys throw for deep cranks in fairly open water fishing structure and what pound test for fishing heavy cover deep.
Thanks in advance

I use 12 lb. Fluro in open water & 15lb in heavier cover. Sometimes I use 10 lb. Fluro in real clear water, but I don't really like to go that small. Sufix makes a deep crankin line, but I've not used it. Anybody out there have a review?

Thanks guys. So it wouldnt be wise to use braid with fluoro leader then? I figured you would get the best of both worlds with a thin diameter and the strength you need around structure.

I guess I havent figured it out yet but why use any braid if your going to use 10# flo. for a leader, most breakoffs are in the first 3ft of hook. When If I use Braid I use it in hvy cover all the way.Deep Cranks 10# P line cxx and dont care if it dont lay out at first.

I'd go straight fluro. My .02 Some people prefer mono to fluro, it's all about what you feel the most confident with.

I've pulled lures out of trees that should of snapped the line.
You know the old saying
If it floats, flys, or f___s it is always cheaper to rent!
You have to decide which is more important.

12lb fluro and up to 15lb if there is nasty structure present.

Once again thanks for the help guys. Looks like straight 12 lb fluoro or mono is the general consensus so thats good enough for me.

I personally do not fluoro for CBs. It feels too much like a DEAD line to me. Might just be my feel, but I use 10-17# copoly. No memory (like Big Game), tougher and streetchier (is that a word?). It is tuff as nails, as I have straightened #4 hooks on 15 lb and #2 hooks with 17#. The tougher the cover or bigger the fish, normally the higher test lb I use. Why use braid (that floats, for the most part) with a sinking line? Diameter DOES impact how deep the bait runs, but you really don't get much help, UNLESS you have a supertuned properly tuned lure. One that runs under the boat when you are cranking it back to you. Then, it doesn't matter that much. Here is a rule of thumb. For each 2# in test, you normally gain 4-8" in depth. For instance, if you go from 12# to 10#,you gain about 6" in depth. A properly tuned bait and an 8' rod will gain you about 15-23" deeper on a long casts. OH, I use McCoys Mean Green and Maxima copoly.
Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

I use 12 or 15lb Seaguar Invizx, I also use a 7'11" Med/Hvy Duckett with Micro Guides. This combination allows me the longest cast with maximum sensitivity. A lot of people use mono for cranking, but you loose a lot of sensitivity and it is KEY when throwing a deep crank. You need to know what your fishing down there and when your hitting the "sweet spot"

Would flouro get a crankbait deeper than mono? I think mono works much better for topwater lures because it floats. Flouro sinks, would that be a factor for getting a crankbait deeper, or not? This is something I have wondered about for a while. I use 15 lb InvizX for all my cranking rods.
