Any recommendation on a hook for use with shiners? I am so frustrated with hooks that bend out when I 'accidentally' catch a black bass or even a white.. and the short hooks are so hard to get out when they swallow the hooks.

Looking for what others use.. and specifically using shiners since too large a hook will just tear them apart

I don't fish minners anymore but when I was, I never had any trouble from the True Turn Red hook. I recall even landing a striper on occasion. Strong, thin hooks IMHO.

All I use is the Tru Turn when using minners. They seem to keep the crappie from swallowing the bait deep. Important when fishing Crappie tournaments. Don't want ot have gut hooked fish then. Caught a 25 pound bluecat recently on them as well as several 20 to 30 inch alligator gar without any problem.

Keep on fishing.

This is the same hook that I use when fishing minners. Never needed to try anything else.

These are a true turn style hook also. Good stuff and sharp! Almost every time I fish will get a hook in me somewhere. Ouch!

Matzuo Sickle Hook is the strongest and sharpest hook.

Pro Angler Tackle carries them.

Personally, I don't worry about if they are alive or torn up. I like it when they are.( Torn up) I like the head bitten off, body shredded, eyes gouged out, of the minnow I refer to. My best slabs seem to come from a minnow that has already caught one or more. I carry a small dip net on a long rod or pole to scoop up used minnows that surface after I just caught a crappie. You can catch several crappie on one minnow, if you can retrieve it after it gets knocked off.

I re-use minnows, too. I fish them on my 1/8 oz tube jig head. It sits horizontal, keeping the minnow in a better position, the jig body is long enough to keep the minnow from sliding up the hook and fowling, and a jig head doesn't get swallowed deep as easily as a regular hook.
