The same properties that make Southern deerhair break, cut, and not flair/spin also make it not float well. It's just not hollow like the Northern deer hair. It does have it's place on the tying bench- sinking flies like mudlers and nymphs

Robin: I'm interested. There used to be a bunch of fly tiers at "Backwoods". I went there a couple of times but all those guys were really seasoned. I'd be more interested in beginner classes where we went over the basics. Focus on 3-5 patterns and share the cost of the materials. (I found myself spending $50 to make a $1 fly.)

Maybe we could talk Mr. Barlow into letting us tie there....although I heard that failed the last time it was tried. But might be worth another go.

Let me know if this leads to something. I'm in.

Well, I want to start some new activity here. I'd like to hear from anyone who is interested in fly tying as a beginner or as a former beginner who would be interested in tips and help on taking a fresh whack at it.

Steve-O

Sounds like a good idea. I have tied at Barlows a few times in the past, don't know what the current environment is like though. Guess we could always find out. If a group of guys showed up and bought up some supplies and then tied there I can't imagine that he'd be too awful miffed smile

What with the holidays I don't really know what it will look like on the scheduling landscape but I sure want to stay in touch, set up something like that. And we can always find somewhere to tie.

We met at "Sonny Bryans" in Richardson near coit and campbell last time. They were happy to have us. We met at 7 and stayed till 9. It wasn't very crowded and we entertained a few kids!

We can do that again, or I can talk to Mr. Barlow. I'll do that anyway.

I would be interested in a beginners class. Unfortunately, I live on the other side of the Metroplex. I need help in getting started--what materials to buy, what flies I should tie to start with.

I bought a book and a bunch of supplies from Blue Heron for 50% off. I'd love to tie my own flies for the upcoming trout release, but I don't really have any idea where to start.

For the trout, try a Zug Bug or a Hare's Ear Nymph.

Ditto on Delrioross and his generosity and quality of the deer hair he has/had. He very kindly sent me three swatches last year. I still have one in the drawer waiting on the "perfect" opportunity. Thanks again Delrio, and I haven't forgotten that dinner I promised you. There's an "all you can eat" catfish joint that's been screaming at me to try'em out. They've obviously never seen me eat catfish. laugh
Steve-O call me dude.
Rhyne drop me an e-mail. Do you still work in Plano? We may very well be neighbors now.

He leadeth me beside still waters.

check your mail Fly and where is this all-you-can-eat catfish diner? I might need to take my crew in there and put a whupin' on 'em smile

Robin: It's okay with Mr. Barlow to tie at his place. He has tables and chairs in the back that we can use.

hey Steve

Sorry I took so long to get back to you. I have not made it yet to do any tying, things have been kind of wild around my house.

When do you folks want to try again?

We'll be at Sony Bryan's this Wednesday from 7-9. Email me if you plan on coming. I know Robin, Fishin addiction, and fly will be there. Just want to make sure we don't have too many.

I want to tie a cricket, grasshopper, and some nymphs. There's a couple places that this would work.
