I am on the eve of buying an outfit and have a few questions?
1. What is better for an all around rod: 2-piece or 4-piece?
2. What do I need to buy to get a "complete" outfit (other than rod, reel, backing, & line)? i.e. selection of starter flies, tippet material, etc.

hi Spencer Freebirds is right, that FAOL page on beginning is the place to go. That being said, there are a couple of points to cover: Two or four piece? That will be up to you. Unless you plan on needing the convenience of the smaller packing space of a four piece rod, the two piece ought to serve completely well and will be somewhat less expensive. Selection of flies; that is a subjective question if ever there were one! But for local area fishing one could not go wrong with some poppers in various sizes, some woolly boogers, some dry flies just to round it out and some Clousers in various sizes. Of course as the habit takes hold the quantity and diversity of the flies in one's collection will grow and grow. Tippet; I may take a few hits for this but I have a spool of four pound mono that has served totally adequately. For bigger game in heavier cover a spool of 12-15 pound mono rounds out my suite of tippet. Usually when after bass I dispense completely with any real leader and just tie on a piece of mono from fly line to fly. So far so good. Of course I always have some leaders on hand in case conditions change. That is the nice thing about fly fishing tackle, it takes up so little room!
