Anyboday have a good recommendation for a fly tying pattern book? I'm looking for something with color and fairly detailed instructions for each class of fly.

I looked on amazon and half.com. Got 5k matches! Yikes! Need a good recommendation.

Like alot of things in this sport, it depends. I assume you're talking about trout flies if you got that many matches on amazon. If you a wanting mainly recipes there used to be one called something like "Trout Flies, The 1000 Best", don't know if it's still in print. There's a new one called Fly Pattern Encyclopedia put out by FFF that has 1600 patterns! That ought to be enough. Orvis has a good pattern book that I always liked because it has good clear pictures and a spiral back so it stays open on your bench.

Whitlock's "Guide to Aquatic Trout Food" is a great book but not a pattern book. The standards from the old days that include the entomology and patterns to match the naturals are Hatches by Swisher and Richards, and Nymphs by Schwibert.

I only have a couple of these but I'd like to have them all. At some point way back I decided to spend money on actual fishing instead of books. Of course with sites like Virtual Flybox you can usually find patterns on the internet nowadays.

One more I just put on my dream list, The Complete Clouser Minnow Vol.2, by Clouser. Bet thats a good read but he wants $30 for it.

hi

If you are looking for something basic, on the different broad classes of flies, head on up to 75% Off Books in Plano. Its in the Garden Ridge mall on Spring Creek, right off 75, and Highway 5.

They have a book on fly tying that has loads of great color images as well as detailed instructions on tying. The book is a big old fat $5.00! Its a big, brown paperback bound book. Forgot the exact name of book but you can't miss it. Its on the Outdoors and Sports table.

Say hi to Steve and Denise

Stopped by 75% off and got the brown book. Perfect! Also got another fly fishing book for $5. Not bad considering the FFF book retails for $100. Maybe some day. Thanks for the tip rrhyne56.
