How do you tie a mylar minnow? My buddy just told me he caught a bunch on one but I didn't ask what it was.

chrysops May I suggest a trip to the local Michael's or reasonable substitute? A walk through those aisles will conjure up all kinds of ideas for flies, at least it has for me ------------------ RRhyne56, Flyfishing Warden rrhyne56@comcast.net Robins Custom Flies and Leaders

Yeah, When I went out fishing with MildBill he showed me this fly... I thought it was pretty simple but looked like a winner. From memory I tied a couple and they look pretty good. I tied some pretty big ones. (2in long) I bought my mylar tubing at Barlow's in Central Expressway. It was 2.95 for a small segment. I would really like to find some cheaper alternatives. I checked out Hobby Lobby but couldnt find any.. I asked my wife to looked for it at a Jo-ann Fabrics and Hancock fabrics but no luck either. Does Michael's have it? Which section?
John 5:24 Very truly I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
1Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.

Christian, I have been looking for more of this stuff also. Bass Pro has it, but not in the small size. I will let you know if I find it. Bill

You guys are looking for the small silver mylar for a Cypert's minnow? For $1 you can get 10 yards of it at either Hobby Lobby or Walmart. It is called "Needloft Craft Cord" and it comes in gold and silver. Actually it comes in other colors, but the gold and silver are a mylar braid over a cotton core. The other colors appear to be solid. Look for a small hank of material, skein shaped, about 2" in diameter and about 6-8" long. It will be near the yarn but usually in a different subsection. At Hobby Lobby it's near the rug yarn, at Wally World I think it's near the embroidery stuff.

Dave, Thanks for the info. I use the pearl color but will go check it out. If it's that cheap I may buy 5 or 6 hundred feet and go nuts with those mylar minnows. A chicken in every pot........ you get the picture. Bill

Bill I like pearl too. At Hobby Lobby in the ribbon section they have pearl curling ribbon. Your tying technique would be slightly different but not much. Even though I stocked up on all sorts of flash colors at one time I think good old pearl flashabou (or ribbon substitute) is all you really need.

Link, Per your suggestion, I went to WalMart this afternoon and, yes they have the mylar cord in 15' spools for .98 cents. But, no pearl. Do you ever tie mylar minnows with silver or gold? Bill

Bill I've never caught a fish on a Cypert Minnow, but then again you know I'm scared of roadkill so it takes all kinds of people However I have tied them with the silver mylar plenty of times. It just so happens that there has never been one on the end of my leader when the fish are bitin' ~Dave

Dave, I'm learning that you are obviously a class act, but I think I need to find a way to convince you to add Road Kill to your life.
The key word when dealing with Road Kill is "Fresh".
Bill PS - Caught most of my Paluxy fish on a size 8 pearl and white Mylar Minnow. The fish loved them therefor I love them.

I remember when my buddy Tim and I were fishing up this canyon every morning and on the way up we would pass this farm with some great looking roosters strutting around near the road. Always hoped one of them would stray alittle closer and we would accidently swerve and...thump,thump....fresh hackle.
