Is for me!!!! Usually take a topwater walking the dog lure, an extra, and 2 gold and two silver spoons and fish until I'm done. All fit in a shirt pocket. Fish tops until the bite stops or they prove to me they don't want a topwater then change to a spoon and throw that until they no longer bite or the crowds show up. Last good topwater bite I had was right after the Fourth of July and the tops didn't get the fish biting until something like 8:30, bite last until after 10. Did a report in that section about that bite. Since then the Mustang/Padre beach has been tough for topwater bite until this week. As mentioned fish will bite anyhing looking like a meal. Pick what you think will work best and get after it. Don't give up right away. Captain Billy is an excellent suggestion if you want to learn the beach, shortens the learning curve. Good post.

I prefer topwater to any other lure in the surf. You can cover a lot of water in a short amount of time. Plus the excitement of watching the strike. I prefer Skitterwalks. Use the "hi pitch" versions in the surf. Darker colors in dirtier water and low light conditions, lighter-brighter colors when the water is calmer, clearer or in bright light.

My future son in law, a Canadian is down for a visit. He gave me a gold spoon, green, red and black paint job on one side, bought at a gas station in British Columbia. This morning I had a 30 span of action in the surf on this spoon where I had a fish every cast. Most undersized but kept 4 over 15 inches.

For topwaters the surf has to be calm enough for you to work them and the get the proper "walking the dog" action. If it's too rough you'll know it. By the same token I don't like the surf to be too calm either. Too calm means less water movement/current. No current usually equals no fish.

Sounds like a spoon they use for Muskie or Walleye or Pike

I cannot believe no one mentioned ''bone''.That's got to be the number one color up and down the coast lately.Tops or soft plastics. This summer I'm throwing nothing but spoons [silver/gold] with different color bucktails.
