I have a Promax 225 and the trim quit working on me at the lake. The solenoids are still clicking when I hit the up or down button. After the solenoids the wires lead to what I'm guessing is the trim motor, is this more than likely what I need... a new trim motor? Ever installed one..easy to do?
Thanks

It's not particularly horrible lol. First things first, take a can of electrical contact cleaner, pull the relays out of their respective sockets and spray inside the sockets liberally. Let sit for 15 minutes, plug the relays back in, and test. If that fails, you can test the trim motor poles directly to B+ to verify that it is definitely the trim motor. During the 15 minute drying period, disconnect your B+ and ground cables from the battery and sand the tops and bottoms of the lugs til they are shiny again, reconnect to the battery. Test and with any amount of luck, it was a bad ground or a little oil on the connections and your back in business

When the trim initially quit working the motor was fortunately low enough to get back on plane. Once I got back on plane it started to work again and like a [censored] I trimmed it up and got on pad then it quit working for good.

Check the ground to the battery real good. If you wetted out the relays, its probable there could be contamination on the poles in the socket which the cleaner will remove. FYI: Depending on the age of your motor, most trim motors are designed with a life expectancy of 15 years give or take. If memory serves, I believe the Promax's were ran 95-97ish so you may be bumping the end of that life span. Better to check the obvious first than to spend hundreds and it still not work One note: if there are only 3 wires going to the top of the trim motor, it is a reversing DC motor. To test, you must connect the blue wire to hot and green to ground and vv. Reversing DC motors do not carry an independent ground for each pole. Good luck to ya Huckleberry and feel free to PM me if you run into a bind

I had the same problem on mine and what I did was took the tilt and trim motor apart and cleaned everything. The brushes are the important part I used some light sand paper and cleaned them off real well and put it back together and it has worked since. I know at some point I'm gonna have to replace mine but its like 300 for mine so I will wait till it quits working completly

Tis true sexyshad. Trim motors are tough and extremely efficient but they are a moving part and subject to wear. One note to that: check for little fractures in the brushes. This is a sign of heat degradation and will only get worse with time. Any blueing of the copper element connected to the brush is a quick indicator as well.

One note: if there are only 3 wires going to the top of the trim motor, it is a reversing DC motor. LOL...well I'm an idiot. I meant if it's a 2 wire, it's a reversing DC. If it has 3 wires (green, blue, black) it has a shared ground in which you would only need to connect one colored wire to B+ at a time to test Sorry bout that

Also I recommend that you learn to lower you motor manually as this will save you a problem if your motor is stuck in the up position.
 Boatless for minute

if you want to see if it's the motor, you can take a 2x4 and lightly tap on it from different angles while holding the button. it may get it temporarily working again, and you'll know if that is the problem or not.

Just did mine on my 225 vmax, it's simple BUT......... when backing the bolts out that hold the actual motor on IF they start to twist off and break, take it to the nearest machine shop so they can get them out. If you break one you'll end up at the machine shop any way. The bolts have very good factory loc-tight on them, at least mine did and the bolts themself are a soft metal. It should have taken about 30 minutes or less, ended up taking alittle longer do to that issue, do big deal though.
