I am planning on making my own locker bar, #1 to save money and #2 because these projects are fun to me. I have a couple of questions for those of you who bought them.
How hard is it to drill into the fiberglass, are you supposed to use a door hole drill bit? I was thinking about using a shower curtain rod holder, and steel tubing?
Any ideas boys?

two plates of aluminum... one on each interior side of the topcap. one heavy guage aluminum expandable rod that will fit into the hole you drilled through the aluminum plating. drill hole in aluminum rod big enough for big padlock.
simple.

I've thought about this too. I've always wanted to build one where I didn't have to drill into the fiberglass. Has anyone built one like that?

Don't think that the homemade one will be very secure. The one I have is made of stainless steel that is about 1" diameter tubing. Even with the heavy steel all a thief has to do is pry it far enough to pull out of the holes.

You are not going to pry the Lok r bar out of the holes. That is one of the reason you drill into the fiberglass. If it is just mounted on a flush plate on the sides of the boat, maybe you can pry it out. Not if it extends into the fiberglass tho.........

From what I hear thieves were using the front winch strap to tie on the bar and just pull it out of the way very easily. Unfortunately the best way to avoid theft is to take all your [censored] out, pain in the butt I know.

They may still do but Loc R Bar offered a reward for proof that it could be broken into via the wench strap. As far as I know there is no video that it can be done. You can't get enough power via that method from the one attempt on video that was done a few years ago.

I think the theft deterrence is were the real value comes in. +1, make yours slightly more work than the other boats and cars around. All you can really hope for. If they want your stuff bad enough, they'll get it. Example: I used to like having a nice stereo in high school and in college. After having 3 break ins over the years to 3 different trucks/jeeps and having to pay for the damage they did out of my own pocket . . . . . . . . . well, I like stock radios now. AM/FM is all I need. Older and crappier looking the better!!
