I have quite a few reels from all different manufactures. I have noticed that some outcast others. Now the reels that I have in question have all been loaded with 12lb. Big Game. They all seem to be in pretty clean condition.

My most expensive reel is a Ambassadeur Morrum 3600 and it has the WORST casting distance and I paid too much money for that reel to sit at home.

Why does my Shimano Curado 100 and even a 30+ year old Amb 4500 reel give me better casting distance than the Morrum?

What can be done to my Morrum to improve casting distance?

You have something amiss with that Morrum. That is one fine reel. How old is that reel?

A Morrum is a very smooth and long casting reel. I would expect with age that the bearings are probably over oiled, the inside of the pinion gear is dirty, etc. Never know until it is checked or with more information.

Not quite sure on the age of the reel. I may have had it 5-6 years, possibly more. Bought it from Southwest Parts & Service. On the reel foot the number that is stamped is 060007. I've included a couple of photos.

That reel should really cast. Something is up. Run it by down at SW at let them check it out. Something is amiss for sure. My guess it is a loaded bearing or the pinion is not releasing all the way.

Excellent advice. Mrrum reels a extremely fine reels. I owen several of the 1600, and 3600 series Mrrums including a couple of 1600 SXs. The Mrrum 3600s are loaded with Daiwa Samurai Braid. I have found that Mrrums are particularly well suited to braid as they incorporate the Triple-Cross levelwind system. This keeps winds the braid at a large enough angle that it does not bite-down into the line in the lower layers of line. I can cast a heavy weight on Berkley Whiplash a country mile with this reel.

I am a little confused because of the lack of distance. When using my Shimano Curado 100B, I can cast a 1/8 oz lure 30 yds. easily. But not the same with the Morrum. I have several of the Abu Tournament Series also and I can get better distance with them. Maybe I am expecting too much from this reel. I don't use this reel very much because of this problem. Everything feels solid, cranks smooth, drag works great.

Going to Southwest Parts & Service this week. So we will see.

Thanks for th input.

You know................. That 3600 isn't really designed to throw light weights. That could be your problem. Go down in size to a 1600 and you will see that.

I have a Morrom Forell in the shop for sale. SWEET reel. The Forell was made for the JDM. I also have an Alphas from Diawa to for sale.

Your Choice $199.00. (Price Reduced) and both are 9.95 out of 10 in condition and include box and papers.

Well I mentioned this to my wife and her answer was NO!

She wants me to clean out my closet and sale some of my current gear. I have 19 baitcast reels and 6 spinning reels along with 32 rods. I am not a hoarder just a collector! I am going to run some ads and I will get back in touch with you. Thanks for your help.

You might try my tactic. I always tell them the downsizing of quantities applies to shoes and jewelry as well. It works quite well. You ought to try it! ( Insert evil snicker!) grin bolt

You're running into what a lot of catfishermen have problems with.

The larger the spool the more it takes to get it going.

Take a Penn 209. Very plain reel. A Penn 9m (downsized version)will outcast this reel with lighter weights. No matter how it is tuned, lubed, whatever. Anything below 4 oz and the 9m wins most of the time. You bump the weight up to get the bigger spool moving and the 209 starts gaining distance. The more line and bigger the spool of the reel the more weight it has. It takes more lure weight to get it spinning. Once you reach that point in the weight, you can start to appreciate the larger spool. Your casting distance starts to go up since your loosing less % of the line per revolution.

I'm going to let things cool down first. I opened my mouth today and it's the couch for me this week. It's okay for her to go buy some wine but not fishing stuff for me. I told her that my rods and reels will still be here in a month and all that wine will be pi$$ed away. Should have listened to my dad and just not say a word.

Sorry for the rant!!!

I find that if I fiddle with my reels too much they change on casting distance.. and if I keep trying to fiddle they just get worse.. but if I just get upset and leave them alone.. they get better and better.. and then suddenly you are casting and you wonder what was happening...so cooling off might be just the trick smile
