there are about 15 carp on the surface of the water at a pond i fish at. they are grouped togather and wiegh about 20 - 30 pounds. how do i catch these. i tried bread rolled up into a ball. but the perch just bit it all off. i also tried corn. i need somthing that will stay near the top of the water where the carp are.

I believe these pods of carp are spawning. You might try a dry fly, though, I don't think it will work. Picture this...if you were courting your favorite girl and someone tossed a pizza in on top of you and her, would you put love on hold long enough to take the bait, especially if there were 10 other guys waiting in the wings to get her attention when your attention waned? I heard that!lol. Try snagging them with a treble hook. I think this is legal since a carp is considered a rough fish. They fight a lot harder if there hooked in the tail or back, they got more leverage. I did this one day about 20 years ago at the Lavon Power plant discharge and had a ball catching 12-15lb. carp and buffalo all day long. I was using a zebco 33 with 12 lb. test, a steel leader and a treble hook. Those big carp fight like the dickens.

I've read about a method they use in Europe to catch carp on the surface...but haven't tried it myself.
What they do is, scratch out a groove on a piece of dry dog food, then super-glue it onto the shank of a hook (opposite the side the barb is on) so it floats.
Toss out a few pieces to get them eating, then toss a few more as you cast so they don't spook.

I've caught them on the surface using a cheeto puff. Floats really well. Must have been after the she made her choice and the 10 males in the wings had nothing to do. [This message has been edited by gar (edited 09-14-2003).]

Or maybe a bow and arrow. I have the rig, never got to try it out.
Any bow hunters here?

Get out the bow. Good practice for the upcoming season.
If not, try a piece of old poly rope frayed out. gets caught up in there teeth, what a thrill. Works great for gar, and have caught quite a few carp at the same time!

Yes this method works great for gar but carp have no verigated teeth they are more like grinders in the very back of there throat they use these for crushing up snails and craysfish and the like. so I am not sure how the rope would get caught up in there teeth??

I have not done it but I know that a mixture of big red, peanut butter, and post toasties mixed together and rolled up into a ball and put on a SMALL hook will git you bit! Local guys do it all the time here.
