I have a 1993 Nitro with the 1993 Mercury 60 horse that came with it. Sunday I was out on Eagle mountain and running the boat without issue. Oil level was good, and water was flowing good out of the water pump indicator hole.. I shut down the main engine and fished for about 30 minutes and then decided to move...

When I started the engine back up, I probably moved about 100 yards and the .. well what I have come to know as the engine overheat alarm started beeping. I immediately shut the engine down, checked the oil (was good), and then started the boat to make sure it was still shooting water out.. it was.

I didn't think the engine was overheating, since I had been fishing for about 30 minutes prior to running the engine. I took the cover off the engine and felt the block, and it was not so hot I could not leave my hand on there for a bit.

So, to get back to shore, I would motor a bit, fish for about 30 minutes, motor a bit, fish a bit etc... Put the boat on the trailer, came home. Today, I went out and put the key in the ignition and it is still making the noise.

The noise is a beep, it is not constant. I read the owner manual and it says if the beep is constant, then it is overheating. If it is beeping, then has low oil in the reservoir. The resevoir is near full... so it has to be something else.

A friend said that the pump that sucks the oil from the resevoir might be out... but he is not a mechanic, and I cannot afford a new boat, this one goes and I am on shore for a long time....

I would really appreciate some help.... thoughts?

probally oil sensor in bottom of oil tank...

probably the float is saturated and to fix that you will need a new tank. you can disconect the sensor but you will have to monitor the oil level.

I appreciate it fellas... Sounds like an easy fix? IS there a way I can be sure it is that and not the little pump that pulls the oil from the resevoir and mixes it with the gas?

Can I test that sensor somehow?

Their is no alarm for the pump, only for the oil level. Unplug 1 of the blue wires coming out of the bottom of the oil tank, with the key on. Beeping stops, thats it. You have 2 choices: replace the oil tank or remove the oil system and start pre-mixing.

I haven't seen one sensor bad, always the oil tank float.

Had the same thing happen on my old 91 Merc 115 with the oil reservoir mounted to the side of the powerhead. There is a magnet glued to the bottom of the float and over a period of time and/or driving in rough water the glue will break loose and the magnet falls and makes the oil level switch. My dad has a 92 115 and it did the same thing as well. The tank has to be replaced as the float/switch assembly is built in. Best to replace all of the hoses as well while your there.

While its beeping pull cap and turn over so the float goes toward the cap and see if it stops.
